"Stearns Beach Days" by Brad Reed
Hello from Team Reed,

It is hard to believe that summer is almost over. July and August were incredibly busy in downtown Ludington and we loved visiting with so many of you! If you didn't get enough time out shooting with your own cameras, there is still time before summer ends. We still have a few spots left in our Heaven on Hamlin Workshop this coming weekend. It starts on Friday, August 23rd at 2pm and ends on Sunday, August 25th at 1:30pm. Carole and Jim Smith are our hosts in their stunning home on the north shore of Hamlin Lake. We will teach you how to "finish" an image in the camera, but most of the workshop will be spent outside shooting along the Lake Michigan shoreline and around Hamlin Lake. One of our main objectives is to get you in front of bald eagles on Hamlin Lake by pontoon boat. Lois Cole is our chef for the weekend and she will spoil us with excellent food and beverages. Each student will have their own bedroom and the accommodations are pretty extraordinary to say the least. The cost is $795 per person. Please call the gallery today at 231-843-0777 to sign up right away.
Here are some photographs that my dad and I shot last year during the Heaven on Hamlin Workshop. All seven students got very similar photos and we had so many laughs and good times making our images together.
"Protecting the Family" - We all made images from the pontoon boat of this majestic bald eagle.
"Finish the Shot" - My dad got into Lake Michigan and showed everyone how to truly finish the photograph in your camera.
We often shoot the Manistee Lighthouse during the Heaven on Hamlin Workshop. We also may shoot Point Betsie Lighthouse during this workshop if the conditions are correct. Many times we don't decide where we are going to shoot until we leave the driveway with all the students. This is more realistic to how my dad and I operate during the year when looking for photographs.
We found these sunflowers a week earlier on M22 and brought the students back to photograph them in a light rain. The rain made all the difference. There is no such thing as bad weather for shooting photographs.
This young bald eagle was sitting in a tree right next door to Carole and Jim's home on Hamlin Lake. The fog and atmosphere really added to the experience last summer!
Speaking of Carole and Jim Smith, here is a photo of the dynamic duo on the pier in Manistee last summer during the workshop.
If you are not able to make this workshop on such short notice, remember that we teach this same workshop every winter! On January 17th-19th, 2020, we will be having another Heaven on Hamlin Workshop!!!
Here are some brand new shots that my dad and I have made this last month since the last newsletter. Any of these images can be purchased by calling the gallery at 231-843-0777.
“Maybe It’s Time” by Brad Reed
Some skies just sing to you. This was one of those moments for me on Friday night in Ludington as I watched the God beams dance over Lake Michigan. Nikon D850. F22 at 1/40, ISO 100. 60-600mm lens at 60mm. On a tripod without a flash. August 16, 2019 at 7:27pm.
“Michigan Cheetah” by Todd Reed
One of three cheetah sisters at Binder Park Zoo steps out of the shadows and into some beautiful diffused light at the wooded edge of its natural domain Monday morning. While the cheetah is the world’s fastest land mammal, capable of reaching speeds of 60 MPH, I am savoring my opportunity to study this most beautiful creature up close and personal through my Nikon telephoto lens. Lions, zebras and giraffes were among the other animals I had the opportunity to photograph while visiting this impressive Battle Creek zoo. Nikon D850. F2.8 at 1/640, ISO 1600. 70-200mm lens at 200mm. On a tripod without a flash. July 30, 2019 at 9:13am.

“Intense Stare” by Brad Reed. Thanks to our photographer friend, Jason Helmer, for helping with this photo! Jason called the owl in for Julia, Ethan, and me. Nikon D850. F6.3 at 1/125, ISO 1600. 60-600mm lens at 600mm. On a tripod with an external flash set to rear sync. August 11, 2019 at 7:03pm.

Thank you for taking the time to read our newsletter. We appreciate all of your support which allows us to be full time story tellers with our cameras. Michigan has a beautiful story that needs to be told, and we feel blessed to be able to help tell that story with our art.

Sincerely,
Brad, Todd, and all of Team Reed
