Weekly Update - August 22, 2019
Dear <<First Name>>,

This week the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) held their annual Substance Use Disorder Statewide Conference. It was the first time the conference has sold out, with more than 800 attendees. We were happy to see members from several Accelerator teams, including members from SafeRx Santa Cruz County who let a presentation on their successful MAT advisory group for local clinicians. Feel free to check out the workshop slides and handouts on the conference website if you were unable to attend.

In her opening remarks, Marlies Perez from DHCS spoke about their exciting new statewide MAT campaign called "Choose Change California." Look out for the campaign billboards in your community. We encourage you to share the tv and radio commercials which are available in English and Spanish, and spread the word about their new website which includes a treatment locator.

Onward,

Opioids in the News

A study from the Urban Institute found that, "the number of Medicaid-covered prescriptions for buprenorphine, which eases cravings and withdrawal symptoms, increased almost fivefold nationally — to 6.2 million from 1.3 million — between 2011 and 2018." Researchers thus assert that Medicaid expansion, increasing access to treatment for low-income Americans, is a critical step in addressing the opioid epidemic.
