Before television, or having the internet available on your phone, how could you see what was happening around the country and the world? Via newsreels from the National Film Unit, of course. These screened in cinemas before the feature: Weekly Review in the 1940s and Pictorial Parade in the 1950s and 60s.

Downtown City Mission (DCM) Wellington helps those affected by homelessness. Over the last few months, Ngā Taonga has been providing monthly screenings for their clients, the taumai. Read about what we've screened and how they've been received.

Tongan Language Week
Queen Sālote Tupou III

Mālō e lelei – Tongan Language Week is 1-7 September. There are over 40,000 Tongans living in New Zealand. Ngā Taonga holds a number of recordings about Tonga, or in the Tongan language. We also have a profile on Queen Sālote Tupou III, one of the country's most beloved monarchs.

9 August 1979 – The Abbotsford Slip left nearly 70 homes in Dunedin uninhabitable.
25 August 1948 – The Frankton Tornado hit Hamilton, killing three and damaging hundreds of homes.
28 August 1954 – Juliet Hulme and Pauline Parker were found guilty of murder – the case was the basis for Heavenly Creatures.
