Jesus prayed to the Father:

I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth (John 17:14-19).

The Lord said several important things about His followers in His prayer that we need to know and remember. First, He said that those that follow Him are not of this world (John 17:16). Of course, He did not mean that His disciples were aliens or that they should charter a flight with SpaceX and leave this earth. Rather, he was highlighting the fact that as Christians we should live on a higher moral plane than the rest of the world. We have a higher standard by which to live and a higher goal to obtain. . . .

Digital Library

The Mt. Vernon Church of Christ is building a digital library to aid serious Bible students in their study.  When possible, we will be adding new volumes.  We are grateful to the many sources from which we draw these volumes for making these available.  We take no credit for them ourselves.  We do not necesarrily endorse everything in every volume.  We simply provide them as aids to Bible study.  This week:

The Bible teaches that a person can become so morally reprobate as to be beyond the reach of conscience and beyond the pale of grace. Grace has its limits! “For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame” (Heb. 6:4-6).

The carnival of lust and vice, in Noah's day, reached its worldwide prominence because the sons of God had married the daughters of men. Evil had existed from the beginning, but the Sethites, at least, were godly and regarded as the children of Jehovah. But they made compromise with sin and lost their innocence and purity. It is always a mistake to strike a bargain with falsehood. When righteousness attempts to accommodate unrighteousness, it always works to the disadvantage of righteousness. Light can have no communion with darkness! Christ has no concord with Baal! Righteousness cannot fellowship iniquity! . . .

Golden Thought

Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment.
-- Benjamin Franklin

TRUE NOBILITY

Who does his task from day to day
And meets whatever comes his way,
Believing God has willed it so.
Has found real greatness here below.

Who guards his post, no matter where,
Believing God must need him there,
Although but lowly toil it be,
Has risen to nobility.

For great and low there's but one test:
`Tis that each man shall do his best.
Who works with all the strength he can
Shall never die in debt to man.

Bible Question of the Week
(All questions come from the Scripture readings.)

What will the unrighteous not inherit?

LAST WEEK'S QUESTION AND ANSWER

What kind of person loves to pray to be seen of men?

ANSWER:
Matthew 6:5 - And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
