Prayer
Father in heaven, all creation rightly gives you praise,
for all life and all holiness come from you.
In the plan of your wisdom she who bore the Christ in her womb
was raised body and soul in glory to be with him in heaven.
May we follow her example in reflecting your holiness
and join in her hymn of endless love and praise.
We ask this through Christ our Lord.
Amen.
Catherine and Marcellin... pray for us.

Principal's Report

FEAST DAY
Once again our celebration of our Feast Day has been a wonderful success with all present joining in all aspects of the day.
Our thanks to Bishop Holohan, Fr Gerald and Fr Con for celebrating the liturgies on each campus and all of our staff and students involved in organising the liturgy.
Special thanks to each Homeroom teacher and class for the work in organising the stalls which have raised much needed funds for those who are in need of help.
The celebration of the day on each campus culminated in wonderful concerts with great spirit from our staff and student performers.
Well done to everyone on both campuses for the enthusiastic contributions.

BCC PRINCIPAL APPOINTMENT
The announcement of the new Principal for BCC has been brought forward with our Board Chair, Mr Danny Griffin, informing our staff today that Mr Michael Pepper will commence as Principal of BCC in 2020.
This message has also been sent to all parents and students in a SEQTA direct message.
Mr Pepper comes with considerable experience and will drive the College forward on the next stage of our history.

PARENTS & FRIENDS
The Mercy P&F meeting held last Monday was a wonderful opportunity for our parents to meet Mr Rob Crothers, the Principal of Our Lady of Mercy College, and to acknowledge the hard work of Mr Dale McAtee who coordinated the Fete and the many parents and students who contributed to the success of the Fete.
It was agreed that the College will hold a biennial Fete with the next Fete to be held in April 2021.
The minutes of the meeting have been posted on SEQTA.

CO-CURRICULAR
As mentioned in the last newsletter, our students have been involved in a wide range of co-curricular activities with wonderful displays activities in the Learning Commons for Book Week, the Science Week activities on the Marist campus, the Year 7 and 8 students having the opportunity to participate in the Lightning Carnival and Year 11 students on the Marist campus involved in the winter sleepout.
Next Friday a Quiz Night will be held to raise funds for Mother Teresa’s orphanage in Kolkata, India.
A number of students will be traveling to India for an immersion experience, spending time at the orphanage.
The funds raised will be given to the orphanage to provide for their needs.
All are welcome to help support this cause. See the poster in this newsletter for details.

INDONESIAN EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Next week we will be welcoming Indonesian Exchange students from Kolese Santo Yusup Malang (St Joseph's College, Malang) for two weeks.
These students will be billeted by our families from both Marist and Mercy campuses.
This is the school that our students visited in the 2018 Indonesian Cultural Tour.
This is a great opportunity for our students to learn more of the Indonesian culture and language and to share our Australian culture with our visitors.

FATHERS’ DAY
Fathers’ Day is fast approaching on 1 September and our students on the Mercy and Marist campuses will our annual Fathers’ Day event.
I hope all of our students take time to show their appreciation of their father or the men in their families who provide them care and mentorship.

College Activities

Feast Day fun
Energy levels were high and fun was definitely not in short supply during the College's annual Feast Day on Friday.
Staff and students on both campuses started the day with a Mass, which was celebrated by Fr Con at Mercy and Bishop Holohan at Marist.
The middle of the day featured activities and stalls on both campuses and these again included a wide range of food stalls and games.
We were fortunate that the predicted rain held off until our outdoor activities had been completed.
Feast Day ended with the traditional concert.
Our talented students from both campuses performed for their colleagues and the songs were well-received.
Entertaining staff acts to conclude the day ensured everybody went home happy.
Science Fair a success
Congratulations to the Science Department on an amazing Science Fair hosted last Wednesday in the BCC Hall as part of our National Science Week activities.
The fair provided students from Years 7 to 11 with an opportunity to present an amazing array of science projects they had been working on throughout Term 2.
All Marist students were given the opportunity to visit the fair during lunchtime, and it was then opened to the public for viewing after school and in the evening.
Students enthusiastically explained and demonstrated their work in designing water filtration systems; designing and building a base station for human habitation on Mars; explaining threats to the survival of bees and how important they are for the sustainability of natural and agricultural ecosystems; explaining the causes of antibiotic resistance and what we can do to prevent it, as well as demonstrating student-built electric motors, and models to explain the structure of plant and animal cells.
Well done to all Science Department staff and the many students involved.
Harry Perkins visit
The Year 12 Human Biology students from both campuses have been studying biotechnology techniques.
They were able to visit the Harry Perkins BioDiscovery Centre and work in a PC2 laboratory, where they amplified a sample of DNA using Polymerase Chain Reaction and then ran that sample through a gel electrophoresis.
Their care and attention to this complex process resulted in an excellent set of correct gels.
Students were also able to identify where the gene mutation occurred that resulted in a melanoma.
The day not only gave them hands on experience of laboratory work but also emphasised the sun safe message to protect themselves against damaging UV radiation.
Pedal Prix
Bunbury Catholic College sent two young teams to Busselton for the annual Pedal Prix event on Sunday.
This human-powered vehicle race lasts six hours and takes place on a closed, controlled course around the Busselton foreshore.
Participation was the culmination of a lot of hard work, as our Year 7 and 8 students involved had met one lunch time per week to prepare for the big day.
The day was an enjoyable challenge and required students to use their problem solving skills after encountering issues they had not experienced during the lead-up to the Pedal Prix event.
Book Week
This celebration on both campuses has allowed students to escape into the wonderful world of literature.
Our Marist campus students were treated to a visit from author Dianne Wolfer on Tuesday, whose books have been recently studied by our students.
Dianne was most impressed with their confidence, great questions and attentive engagement and was also very positive about our library.
She has shared her thoughts on the visit on her blog, which can be read by clicking the link below.
At Mercy, students have been able to escape into the world of Diagon Alley from Harry Potter thanks to an exceptional and interactive display created by our Learning Commons staff.

Year 10 footballers reign supreme
Our Year 10 football team were the champions of the Associated and Catholic Colleges (ACC) Division 1 carnival held in Perth last Wednesday.
The boys drew their opening game against Emmanuel Catholic College after letting the opposition back into the contest near the end, and the result would prove important.
Wins against CBC Fremantle, Mazenod and Sacred Heart followed for our College team, which meant we finished level on points with Emmanuel.
Our superior percentage, helped by a big 8.5 (53) to 0.0 (0) win against Sacred Heart in the final game, ensured we would leave Perth with the trophy.
It was an exceptional effort by our team who had also won the South West division to qualify.
Soccer season ends
The College's involvement in the 2019 Champion Schools soccer competition came to an end last week.
After winning the South West division and qualifying for the state rounds, our senior boys were drawn to play away against specialist soccer school John Curtin College of the Arts.
The Fremantle-based school has won four of the last five state titles and proved too strong for our young team, which only featured one Year 12 player.
In cold and wet conditions, the College team gave their all, however, the opposition's increased opportunities to train alongside each other began to show as the match wore on.
Surfers experience success
Congratulations to all who represented the college in the SunSmart School Surf Titles last Wednesday.
Held at the Back Beach in Bunbury and with challenging conditions on offer, our surfers performed extremely well.
Both senior bodyboarding teams faced off against each other in the finals, with the end result seeing Morgan Cowan and Kade Gibbons defeat Ben Fulton and Millar Newport.
Junior bodyboarders Kyle Schubert and Matthew Jansen also progressed to the semi-finals.
Lightning Carnival
Many Year 7 and 8 students from both campuses participated in the Lightning Carnival yesterday.
This is a non-competitive carnival and for many students it was their first chance to represent Bunbury Catholic College on the sporting field.
Some of our senior students also acted as coaches for their younger colleagues and we thank all of them - plus our staff coaches - for their time and passing on their expertise.
Our teams performed well across a variety of sports at Hay Park and around Bunbury.
