The faculty and staff of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health (DOPBH) welcome the 2023 class of Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) medical students. We are excited to be part of your medical school education and I wish each new student professional and personal success.
Over the past six months we have launched several new departmental clinical, educational and research initiatives.  Our faculty members now provide Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) treatment to individuals with treatment resistant depression at our faculty group practice in Miami. TMS services are provided to eligible Medicare recipients, in addition to accepting reimbursement from other third-party payers and self-pay patients. For more information on TMS services see the Did You Know section of this edition of Nexus.
The Department’s educational portfolio has expanded to include a college mental rotation for our Citrus Health Network-FIU psychiatry residents. All senior PGY-4 psychiatry residents rotate with our faculty through the FIU Student Health Services. Our on-campus rotation is an enhancement to the residents’ already rich training experience.
Under the leadership of Carlos Salgado, MD, we have also developed the curriculum, faculty and rotation sites and manage the core psychiatry clinical clerkship for our FIU-American University of Antigua (AUA) Graduate Clinical Core Rotation Certificate Program. This expansion of our medical student teaching through our College of Medicine’s Office of International Affairs was initiated December 2018.
Adriana Foster, MD’s leadership and outstanding efforts have begun to produce results regarding our research projects. Research collaboration with faculty from the FIU Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work, FIU Nicole Wertheim College of Nursing & Health Sciences, FIU Center for Advanced Technology and Education, Icahn School of Medicine at Mt Sinai in New York City, the University of Florida and Citrus Health Network are ongoing. Dr Foster has begun work on the following funded research projects:  Impact of Clinician Virtual Human Interaction Training in Emotional Self-Awareness on Patients Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Crisis Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial (NIMH funded) and Training Emotional Self-Awareness and Empathic Communication in Encounters with Suicidal Patients: A Longitudinal Randomized Control Study Using Virtual Human Interaction (funded by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention). In addition, Dr Foster, our faculty and staff will soon begin recruiting subjects at our Miami faculty group practice site for the Using rTMS for Depression research study.
The Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health remains committed to its departmental values and seeking excellence in everything we do.

Daniel “Dr C” Castellanos, MD
Assistant Dean for Graduate Medical Education
Founding Chair, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Health, Professor of Psychiatry & Pediatrics

Rodolfo Bonnin, PhD
Assistant Professor
Dr Bonnin joined FIU in 2007 as the Director of Assessment and Evaluation for the Office of Medical Education. He oversees and maintains an assessment environment intended to improve college-wide programmatic learning outcomes and to meet accreditation requirements. In addition, Dr Bonnin prepares medical students for residency-readiness. He is the Co-Course Director for the Professional Behaviors I course and teaches undergraduate Research Methods courses for the Department of Psychology.
Dr Bonnin has led the charge to further develop assessments through an innovative methodology called “reliability across assessments,” which is a data-driven approach to developing exams based on the theory of cognitive consistency. He has created a comprehensive tool that provides faculty with a global view of assessment outcomes for quality improvement purposes. He continues to do research in this area and hopes to patent the tool he created with colleagues.
At DOPBH, Dr Bonnin has spearheaded the integration of a medical student-focused suicide training program into the curriculum. The goal is to increase student awareness and improve their clinical competencies in patient care. FIU is to become one of the first medical schools in the nation to integrate this type of training into a medical education curriculum. The training will officially begins now in the Professional Behaviors course, and will continue into other courses and clerkships throughout the four-year curriculum.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation - Dr. Axe Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) Services & Consultation
Our board-certified faculty psychiatrists in collaboration with the Center for Advanced Technology and Education at the FIU College of Engineering and Computing are pleased to offer the FDA-cleared MagVita TMS Therapy for depression at the FIU Health Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) located in Miami.

TMS was approved for use by the FDA as a treatment for major depression for patients who do not respond to at least one antidepressant medication in the current episode. Approximately 14 to 30 percent of people who have not responded to medication may respond to TMS. Our faculty psychiatrists have advanced training and are certified to offer TMS services. They can provide a comprehensive consultation, assessment and treatment options to individuals experiencing difficulties with depression. Patients will be able to be educated about TMS as well as receive treatment without the need of additional referrals.

If you have a patient or know  someone whom you feel may benefit from TMS please refer them for an in-depth consultation to determine whether TMS is the most appropriate treatment for them. For an appointment please call the FIU Health ACC: 305.348.3627.
