Japanese & Saskatchewan Companies Join Forces to Advance CCS and Reduce CO2 Emissions
With a shared interest and desire to take impactful action on climate change by significantly cutting carbon emissions, organizations representing Japan and Saskatchewan have agreed to collaborate on accelerating the use and understanding of carbon capture utilization and storage (CCS/CCUS). A joint commitment in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on October 8, 2019 in Tokyo, by Japan CCS Co., Ltd, and Canadian based, International CCS Knowledge Centre.

Expedite CCUS Technology - a Clear Mandate by the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI) at Climate Week
Climate week is an important, annual global event that runs in coordination with the United Nations and New York City - showcasing climate action and discussions on what else can be done. Climate week draws participants from a multitude of sectors seeking to learn as well as add their perspectives. I was pleased to represent the International CCS Knowledge Centre at many activities. I will highlight two events hosted by the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative (OGCI).
The first was a highly interactive and facilitated Working Session on CCUS. The session, which fell under Chatham House Rules, was part of ongoing work of the CCUS Alliance of Champions project, jointly sponsored by the OGCI, Shell and BHP. This was not just another CCUS workshop. While CCUS workshops are valuable and necessary for sharing new technical and policy considerations, this session focused on CCUS narratives, and the technology’s role as one of many solutions in reaching climate goals. At this workshop we asked ourselves questions like, ‘How can CCUS play a role?' and 'How do we catalyze the technology to accelerate its deployment?'

Making a Business Case for Large-Scale CCS
In a world dedicated to having both a safe, clean, environment - represented in the COP21 Paris Agreement; and having economic progress – evident with the desire and drive for growth and prosperity, a consolidative and deployable approach that holds both these qualities with integrity, is needed. “There is no silver bullet to a 2-degree-or-less future. We need to stop putting carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere, and for that we need to fire off at least three bullets at once: energy efficiency, renewables, and carbon capture and storage (CCS),” as citied in the DNV-GL article by Kaare Helle and Anne Louise Koefoed.

CCUS on World Stage; Now Needs Policy Push
Touted by United Nations as a necessary and ready-to-go technology in the urgency to mitigate climate change, carbon capture and storage (CCS or CCUS) was on the agenda at the Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM).
The International CCS Knowledge Centre along with CEM’s CCUS Initiative provided platforms at CEM for the exploration of the hurdles and possibilities in advancing CCUS as a key technology to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs). CEOs, senior executives in the financial sector and ministers discussed how to move forward with CCS in the short term to achieve tangible progress.
It was widely agreed that it is the lack of policy or policy uncertainty that impedes deployment. During the session on financing CCUS, panelist reiterated that markets alone cannot drive most CCUS projects – that clear and stable policy drivers are required.

Large Scale CCS Allows Industries and Societies to Continue to Prosper
Managing resources and taking care of the planet while allowing societies to prosper is a topic seen on news feeds every day in the form of emission reduction conversations. Industry is responsible for 40% of global energy demends and is central to economic development around the world. The downside is that industrial processes account for one-quarter of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

Sharing Key Learnings from BD3 CCS Facility at PCCC5
With a room full of technical experts from around the world, many of whom are in demonstration mode with carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects, the recent IEAGHG’s Post Combustion Capture Conference (PCCC), held in Tokyo (September 17-19, 2019) provided an opportunity to present technical updates on SaskPower’s Boundary Dam Unit 3 Carbon Capture Facility (BD3), and to consider net-zero opportunities for CCS.
The International CCS Knowledge Centre made four presentations. The first two focused on the various corrections that were made to BD3. Now five years since it began operations, BD3 is on the eve of reaching three million tonnes of CO2 captured and safely and permanently stored through either enhanced oil recovery or deep geological storage. The 3rd explained how further advancements have made it possible for BD3 to increase its ability to operate closer to theoretical maximum capture rate. The 4th presentation focused on a high-level cost analysis of converting the Shand Coal-Fired Power Station (Shand) to Bioenergy with CO2 Capture and Storage (BECCS).

CCS Summer Intensive School - a Large-Scale Success
Summer is generally a time to kick back and take life a little easier. But for 39 PhD and early career professionals from 20 countries selected to attend the 13th annual IEAGHG CCS Summer School from July 8 – 12th in Regina, Saskatchewan, their kickoff to summer was anything but a walk in the park. Facing 14-hour days that included presentations from carbon capture & storage (CCS) experts, group work, networking, group presentations and a day-long field trip, these brilliant young people devoured content on every aspect of CCS, from capture and storage, health and safety, to regulations, communications and policy.

CCS on Agenda at Global Clean Energy Ministerial Event - STANDING ROOM ONLY!
The International CCS Knowledge Centre was delighted to play a key part in featuring carbon capture and storage (CCS or CCUS) at the Clean Energy Ministerial / Mission Innovation (CEM/MI) event held in Vancouver in May 2019.
Every year, CEM/MI host their annual event to foster clean energy action among member countries. This multi-day event welcomed ministers and high-level government delegates from over 25 countries, as well as senior officials and leaders from international organizations and industry.
