Sailors Safety & Regulations Forum

Date: Thursday 29th August  - THIS WEEK

Attendance at the Sailors Safety and Regulations Forum is mandatory by the Owner, Skipper, Person-in-Charge of the boat. 
This event is for Yacht Racers, Cruising & Centreboard. A great educational forum on our waterways.

Review of Committees 

The RPAYC Board has been involved in a review of all Club committee charters and is nearing the end of that review process. Our aim is to finalise details at the August Board Meeting, later this week. We look forward to providing you with an overview in the next RPAYC eNewsletter and also encourage you to consider becoming a future committee member of committees that suit your qualifications and interests.

Club Member Achievements

Hempel World Cup Series 2020, Enoshima, JAPAN 
Good Luck to Tash Bryant & Annie Wilmot (49erFX), Jim Colley & Shaun Connor (49er) and Jason Waterhouse & Lisa Darmanin (Nacra 17) who are in Enoshima, Japan for the first event of the 2020 World Cup Series. Hempel World Cup Series Enoshima is expected to be harder to win than the Olympic test event, based on larger fleets and nations having more than one entry who are capable of winning.
Across the ten Olympic fleets, 534 sailors from 55 nations will race.

Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships, CANADA
RPAYC Youth Development & Centreboard sailors, Oliver Gordon & Bayley Taylor, have finished racing at the Laser 4.7 Youth World Championships in Kingston, Canada.
Ollie qualified for the Gold Fleet and finished in 53rd overall. Bayley finished in 47th place in the Women's.

A Class World Championships, UNITED KINGDOM
An update on Mark Griffith who is over in the UK. He has finished the British National Championships in 9th Place. He is now competing in the A Class World Championships in Weymouth & Portland where they have had 2 races in reportedly tough & flukey conditions so far. Follow his results here.

Australian Hydrographic Evening - CYCA 

Mike Prince Director National Charting Program of the Australian Hydrographic Office (AHO) will be presenting an evening on the very latest in Electronic charts and current updates to Paper charts, and their future. 
Mike will be presenting information relating to the work of the Hydrographers Office and the production of electronic and paper charts for navigational purposes. He will also explain and talk about the important issues regarding the use of electronic charts and use real examples of GPS assisted groundings to illustrate these issues.

Portuguese Picnic - August 

Another successful Portuguese picnic, this time hosted by Commodore Michael Lockley. Beautiful weather and a few boats raced there including Inevitable and Ola. Thank You to Wendy Kay and Robbie & Robyn Cole who were our race officials.

The 2019 David Lukins Memorial Match Racing Regatta will take place on 21st & 22nd September, 2019 and will be a WS Grade 4 event. Up to Ten (10) teams will be invited to participate in this 2 day event which will feature a round robin, semi-finals & finals.

2019/2020 Yachting Season

The new season commences with Opening Day on Saturday 7 September with the Sail Past Parade followed by the Pittwater Dash (a Pursuit race this year) which is also Race 1 of the Commodores Club Champion Series

The New Sailing Handbook is now available to download or copies of the printed A5 version are available from Reception. 

The Online Entry System is OPEN, offering a Multi Entry race form ($50), individual Series Entry (FoC, except Commodores Cup & Regattas) or Casual Entry options (non-pointscore). The Board have extended free entry for Full Members, please note the conditions in the Sailing Handbook. 

Competitors are also encouraged to upload their Audit & Insurances Certificates into their online Entry form. A very handy option for those owners that participate with other Club's. You can also add your crew for the Series via your entry form.

Audits, Rating Certificates, Start Times

Note to be eligible to compete all boats require a valid Audit form for the Category of race they are Entering. Spot Checks will occur this season with boats drawn at random and advised that a Club Auditor will inspect their boat for compliance to the regulations. 

Rating certificates (IRC, ORC, SMS) are required to be current and submitted to the Sailing Office before they will apply, where applicable. NEW, Rating certificates will only apply up until their expiry date (no carry over). 


Start Times for the Sprint Series has been brought forward to 1200hrs and SOPS to 1200hrs and Estuary Series to 1315hrs.

2019/20 Centreboard Season

Don't miss the Club's Opening Day celebrations on 7 September. Centerboard competitors and families are invited to jump on board a Club Elliott 7 to participate in the Sail Past & Pittwater Dash. Register with the Sailing Office by 4 September.

Training program for Green & Intermediate Classes are outlined below with further details on the registration page.
Minimum participants are required and a 6:1 ratio is followed for training. To be eligible to participate you must have registered online & paid prior to the Course beginning.
The Club has moved to a new registration system for all Training through RevSport (Australian Sailing).

Optimist TT2 Results 

The second Travellers Trophy of the Optimist season - 'TT2' was held at the RSYS on Sunday 25 August. 76 Optimist dinghy sailors registered to compete. Congratulations to all of our centreboard sailors and a big congratulations to Austin Cross who won the Open Fleet.

I would like to volunteer for Centreboard Race Management

Training News

The training season commences soon from Kids Learn to Sail, Class Training, Youth "Out There" Program, Schools through to Adult Programs.
This includes but is not limited to 
dinghies, multihulls, wind surfers, SUPS and keelboats. 

This season the Club will be using the Australian Sailing RevSports online registration system for all programs. Note that no registrations will be taken manually and payments must be received prior to the commencement of the activities.

Training will follow the School Term time dates.

Class Training Program

Class training for Green Fleet Optimists & Lasers and Intermediate Optimists will commence on 8th September with an initial 4 week morning program.
Intermediate Fleet are encouraged to enter and participate in Sunday Club racing. In Term 4, Green fleet Optimists training will include race coaching. All participants planning to race will need to enter online via the Centreboard Entry System. 
  • Training 1: Sunday 8 September- 29 December, 0900-1200hrs (Optimist/Laser Green Fleets training) & 10:00-12:00hrs (Optimist Intermediate training)
  • Training 2 (Term 4): 20 October - 15 December, 1300-1600hrs (Optimist/Laser training & CB racing) & 10:00-12:00hrs (Optimist Intermediate training) - excluding 24/11/19
ACTIVE KIDS Voucher can be used for 'Training 2' when registering online. Minimum participants required, ratio 6:1.

October Holiday Program

Kids Learn to Sail 'Tackers' Levels 1-3 (7-11yrs) & a NEW Youth 'OutThere Program' (12-17yrs) will be available these coming holidays at the Club. 
  • Week 1: Monday 30 September - Thursday 3 October.
  • Week 2: Tuesday 8 October - Friday 11 October.
The Kids Learn to Sail program is taught in the Clubs Optimist dinghies and has three development stages. 
  • Tackers 1 - Having FUN
  • Tackers 2 – Tricks & Techniques
  • Tackers 3 – Sailing Fast
The OutThere Program is design for youth who wish to try a range of on water activities, sailing, wind surfing, stand-up paddle boards, dinghies and keelboats. ALL COURSE ARE OPEN TO VISITORS TO THE CLUB.

Each course ends with a family BBQ on the Club's Sundial Lawn.

RPAYC Coaching Services

Are you new to sailing, coming back to sailing or wanting to tuneup your skills. Contact the Sail Training department for some Coaching assistance. 

Keep your skills sharp without committing to a full program, and get out on beautiful Pittwater when it suits you best. These sessions are ideal for people who are short on time but still love sailing! Our prices are all inclusive of boat usage and instructor hire
Training sessions are less formal than a course and have no predefined syllabus. You have more freedom to practice what you choose. Contact the Sailing Office on 9998 3771 or email sailtraining@rpayc.com.au to book.

There is space on board a Club Elliott 7 for up to to 4 participants. Private Keelboat Lessons are priced at $100 per hour/per person with a minimum session time of 2 hours, however we recommend 3 hours as a more efficient use of time.

Own a boat already or seeking dinghy training, coaching can be provided at $60 per hour/per person. Contact the office for a customised package to suit your needs. 

With winter upon us preparation for the new season begins with a number of Training Courses available

Safety & Survival at Sea (SSSC)
  • Option 1 - Above & Beyond Boating have a SSSC courses scheduled at the club: 2-3 November. Booking is required as there are limited spaces. The course is organised and run by Above and Beyond Boating, full details and booking follow the link below. The SSSC costs - $595 per person.To book your place go to: Register Here. 
     
  • Option 2 - Marine SafetyWorks have numerous World Sailing Safety & Sea Survival Courses booked which are based down in Rose Bay (Theory) & Qantas Pool (Practical)  for the coming months as well. For more details and to book  Click Here. 
VHF / HF Radio
  • If your boat has a VHF radio then you need this licence to use the radio and to obtain an MMSI number for your radio and/or AIS. This is our recommended pathway to a radio licence unless you are planning to operate HF radios. Register Here.
