College Mental Health Programs Alumni Newsletter

Welcome to the 2nd edition of our NITEO alumni newsletter! This issue, we're featuring our Fall series of events - including the August Family and Friend Night, a Transfer Workshop Series, and our NEW Activities schedule.

Family and Friend Series

Beginning August 27th, the Center will hold several mini-conferences, each focused on the mental health of young adults. Each will have a keynote speaker; be that a mental health professional, a parent or even a student. The goal of these conferences is for the community to come together to learn, share and support one another. If interested, please RSVP to cjoly@bu.edu.
Fall 2019 College Transfer Workshop Series

During the month of October, the Center will be running a series of transfer workshops. Students will be guided through the transfer admissions process step by step, culminating with students submitting their transfer applications. The workshops will be held at the Center from 3:00-5:00 pm each Wednesday during October. If interested, please contact Courtney Joly-Lowdermilk at cjoly@bu.edu

We hope to see you there!
Off-Campus Mental Health Support

Finding the right therapist can be difficult, especially when leaving home to attend college. On-campus support has many limitations and is often unable to meet the unique needs of students. Below are a few resources students can use to find professional, off-campus support to fit their mental health needs.
  • MiResource: Allows students to input information about their current situation (emotional state, what type of help they are looking for, etc). The website then provides them with mental health supports based on their location and the information they provided.
  • The Shrink Space: This website allows students to find licensed therapists near their zip code. Many of the therapists specialize in helping college-aged students. This is a great tool for someone who travelled far from home to attend school and wants to remain consistent with their mental healthcare.
  • The Thriving Campus: This is a connection between college mental health centers and off-campus practitioners. Thriving Campus is a subscription based service that the college must sign up for and may only be available at some institutions.
The Haven at College

The Haven is a comprehensive substance use/misuse resource for college students. Support ranges from simple conversations about substance use to outpatient treatment options. The Haven provides on-campus support, making it that much easier for students to get the help they need. College enrollment isn't required, however, The Haven is aimed and centered around "college-bound" students. More information can be found at https://www.thehavenatcollege.com/
Bill S.731

This Bill allows public high schools in Massachusetts to include an optional mental health promotion to their health education curriculum. This is a very important addition to the curriculum as there is a major stigma surrounding mental health, especially for high school and college aged students. The earlier that students learn about mental health, the sooner they can begin to take positive steps to care for themselves and advocate for help. We'll be following the progress of the Bill and will provide updates as they occur.

Fall Activities Schedule
As always, classes are free, open-enrollment, and meet at the Center. Please contact Courtney at cjoly@bu.edu for more information!
