Letter to the Editor

"One of the major shortfalls of cycling organizations and the government is the lack of appropriate signage about the one metre rule. It is my guess that a poll of motorists would show a small percentage are actually aware of the rule and its implications for motorists (i.e. no crossing yellow line in face of traffic, etc.). Despite the much older cycling culture in countries such as Spain, signs showing a car and a motorists with a line between and the words 1.5 metres above the line (that's the law in Spain) are common. What's more, these signs are large, more like a billboard, compared to the tiny bike route signs you can find on our roads if you look hard enough.

Something needs to be done to redress this situation. The sign at the start east end of the Aspotogan put there by RECAP could serve as a model, although it is a bit too far off the road. About 50 of them strategically placed around the province at secondary roads leaving major centres would be a great boost to cycling safety at a fraction of the cost of bike routes. Governments, both municipal and provincial, have spent millions on cycling routes and supporting cycling organizations and they have neglected something as basic as signage. What gives?"

$25 million set for Halifax bike lanes project

"Halifax and Dartmouth cyclists will see more protected bikeways in the next three years thanks to a multimillion-dollar project funded by the municipality and provincial and federal government.

The three levels of government committed a combined total of $25 million to complete a 30-kilometre system of bicycle and pedestrian pathways on both sides of the harbour."

BREAKING NEWS - HERE COMES THE ORANGE WAVE!

Cape Breton University will launch a Bike Share program during Welcome Week this September. This is an important first for Nova Scotia. CBU Bike Share will initially offer 25 bikes for use by students and staff from the quad on campus. Students and staff will access the orange bikes with an app on their smart phone and they can use the bikes free of charge for the day and return them to the campus.

The CBRM municipality has built a 10km paved, off-road multi-use path that connects the university to both Sydney and Reserve Mines/Glace Bay. The Maryann Corbett Trail is anchored on the Sydney side by the area’s largest commercial district. The bikes will be useful for students in residence (500) running errands or getting to jobs or just having fun.

The launch will include cycling skills courses and organized rides and events. This is a pilot project undertaken by CBU, CBRM and Velo Cape Breton.  It is funded by CBU and the Nova Scotia Department of Energy and Mines.

The Randonneurs: Paris-Brest-Paris Event

The Randonneurs Nova Scotia cycling club has been having a great season; even with the cool rainy start to the year we’ve been getting some excellent attendance on our longer rides.

This season’s schedule is designed to culminate in participation in the world’s largest ultra-marathon cycling event, the Paris-Brest-Paris 1200km, in France. This will take place from August 18-22nd this year.

Paris-Brest-Paris is the oldest organized cycling event on the planet, predating even the Tour de France by a decade; it takes place every four years.

This year, five Nova Scotia riders will challenge themselves to complete the 1215km course in 90 hours or less. All of these riders have completed a qualifying series of “brevets” this spring including a 200km, 300km, 400km, and 600km ride. They will join over 6000 riders from 58 countries around the world in this amazing event.

Nova Scotia riders include John Archibald, Mark Beaver, Gordon Launcelott; Micheline McWhirter, and Adam Pearce.

Watch for updates on their progress on our Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/groups/1430515057189197 during the third week of August!

Our club has a full series of rides through into November that are a little more achievable for the regular rider, though, check out our ride schedule at http://randonneurs.ns.ca/enter-now/

Comment from Drgonzo on the ECMTB forum

"After a recent out of province/country bike trip fell through, I had the opportunity over the past week to ride some more local trails. Monday: MRWA; Tuesday: The Gorge; Wednesday: Empire/Gore; Thursday: Vic Park and Keppoch. Stoked every single day. In short, life is good, have been blown away at the quality/ quantity of trails by venturing just a little bit farther than my usual and still sleep in my own bed.
Thanks to all the peeps who’ve made these trails happen."

Fundraising Dance for McIntosh Run Trails – October 19

Enjoy reggae and old-school ska with some rock’n’roll and smooth funk tossed in as The Hopping Penguins provide the music at Trail Party!, the McIntosh Run Watershed Association (MRWA) fundraising dance. All proceeds from the event, which is being held October 19 at the St. Mary’s Boat Club in Halifax, will support ongoing expansion of the McIntosh Run singletrack trails—the sustainable network developed by MRWA, the non-profit community group that's the voice for the McIntosh Run, its tributary waters and the land within its watershed in Spryfield, NS. The trails are ideal for mountain biking, hiking and snowshoeing, and give the public access to and views of the beautiful McIntosh Run River, diverse wetlands, granite bedrock outcrops, and unique Jack Pine barrens.

Tickets for the dance are $30 in advance or $40 at the door, but don’t delay: already nearly half the tickets are sold. Go to https://www.eventbrite.ca/e/mrwa-trail-party-with-the-hopping-penguins-tickets-63049336262?aff=ebdssbeac
