2019 Fall Camporee for Pathfinder District

A note from the Pathfinder District Program Team: Greetings, fellow Scouters! As we begin the school year, Pathfinder District is looking for Unit assistance with our upcoming Camporees.

First, the Section Fall Camporee is no longer a Section event; it will be a Pathfinder District event instead. With this change, we are looking for a Scouts BSA Troop to host the Fall Camporee at Ransburg Scout Reservation on September 27th, 28th and 29th.

We are also looking for host for the following Camporees:

  • Winter Camporee; January 24-26, 2020; Camp Kikthaweund - Hosted by Troop 263
  • Spring Camporee; April 24-26, 2020; Camp Bear Creek - Seeking a host Troop, Crew or Ship
  • 2020 Fall Camporee; September 25-27, 2020; Ransburg Scout Reservation - Seeking a host Troop, Crew or Ship

If your Troop (or Crew or Ship) is interested in hosting any of these Camporees, please contact Garod Cavanaugh, District Vice-Chair of Program, at garodcavanaugh@gmail.com as soon as able. Thank you in advance!

Yours in Scouting,
Garod

Upcoming Training Opportunities for Scouters & Scouts:

2019 University of Scouting: Every Scout deserves a trained leader. The University of Scouting, the premier training event in the council, is one of the easiest ways for adult volunteers to achieve this goal. This single-day training event is designed to supplement any leader’s training. Any Scout leader may attend.
- Information & Registration: https://www.crossroadsbsa.org/university-of-scouting/

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) and Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO): IOLS is required training for Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters and Crew Advisers! Pack and Webelos Den overnighters require at least one leader who has completed BALOO.
- Information & Registration: https://scoutingevent.com/160-2019IOLS

Merit Badge Counselor Position-Specific Training: All Merit Badge Counselors need to complete this position-specific training, either online or in person. There are four in-person training opportunities left in 2019!
- Information & Registration: https://www.scoutingevent.com/160-mbctraining19

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT): National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home units and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

2019 Fall Wood Badge Course - LAST CALL

The 2019 Fall Wood Badge Course is a few short weeks away! Having already sold out - TWICE - and becoming an expanded course for 56 luck Scouters, and few cancellations mean there are now only 4 seats available. If you know someone - whether yourself, someone in your Unit, Pathfinder District, or throughout the Council - who isn't yet Wood Badge trained, we'd love it if you would invite them to attend. But time is running out: register today and join the ADVENTURE!

2019 Recruiting Season Update

We are deep into the recruitment season, with only one week of join night events left. We have registered many new scouts, but we are still short of the goal we set. Here are some tips to aid in your recruitment efforts:
  1. Reach out to all of the families who showed interest at your Pack's / school's ice cream social / meet the teacher night, but did not show up to your Join Night. Invite them to your first Pack meeting so they can see the Pack in action. Recruiting should never stop with your Join Night!
  2. Encourage your Scouts (new and returning) to invite a friend not in Scouting to an upcoming Pack meeting or other fun event. (The BSA Recruiter Strip award patch is a great incentive for this effort!)
  3. Have a Unit Key 3 leader log into My.Scouting.org and check the Unit's invitation and application management screens from the drop down menu. There are several applications or interest forms that have been submitted online but not opened by Unit leadership. Reach out to Allen Wente at allen.wente@gmail.com if you are unfamiliar with the on-line application system and would like assistance.

Popcorn Fundraiser Updates from the District Popcorn Kernel!

  • Distribution of Units' initial popcorn inventory orders will be on Friday, August 23rd, from 2:30pm until 7:00pm at Millennial Transport Service (2405 S. West St.). Any Unit Kernels who have not yet signed up for their order pickup slot should do so ASAP:
    https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090C4BA9AB2BA5FD0-popcorn

  • The first Pathfinder District intra-Unit sales competition will begin on Monday, August 26th, and run through September 8th. All of the participating Scouts in the Unit selling the most White Cheddar bags during that time will receive a special race car prize! More information will be sent to your Unit Kernels on this directly.

  • Train your Scouts to get more YES responses ... “Would you like to buy popcorn?” does NOT work! Focus on what you are doing in Scouting and how their donation helps others in the community. Something like this:

“Hi, my name is (name)! I’m earning my way to Summer Camp. Can I count on your support? All of the popcorn is delicious, and  you will help fund my many adventures in Scouting. If you don’t have any cash, don’t worry – I can take credit cards!”

Try it with your Scouts at home!

  • There are still more than 2,100 hours of Storefront shifts available in Pathfinder District alone! Has your Unit registered for any Storefront sales shifts yet? If not, have your Unit Kernel contact Misty Walker at mistywalker1829@gmail.com for more information on how to get started!

Where and How to Follow Pathfinder District on Social Media

Pathfinder District's Official Facebook Page
Pathfinder District's Official Twitter Feed
Pathfinder District's Official Instagram Feed
Pathfinder District's Official Web Page
Pathfinder District's Official YouTube Channel
There are a lot of different social media options these days, and while Pathfinder District won't be using all of them, we are going to utilize some of them to get you the information you need for your Unit!

But social media is complicated. So, here's the basics of how to follow us, and how to see our posts as often as possible:

Facebookfacebook.com/PathfinderDistrictBSA
  1. Navigate to our official Facebook page: Pathfinder District - CAC BSA (note, this is a Page and not a group)
  2. "Like" the page, if you haven't already.
  3. Click the “Following” button to get the drop-down menu.
  4. Make sure you’ve got the “Get Notifications” option toggled on.
  5. Finally, choose the option to “See First.”
This should help ensure you see as many posts as possible. However, Facebook's algorithm rarely shows every post from a single Facebook page to any Facebook user, so you may still miss some from time to time. Thus, it's recommended to go directly to our Facebook page periodically to see if there's anything you may have missed.

Twittertwitter.com/PathfinderCAC
  1. Navigate to our official Twitter feed: @PathfinderCAC (Pathfinder District - CAC BSA)
  2. “Follow” the feed, if you haven't already.
  3. Click the "bell" button to turn notifications for Tweets from us ON.
  4. Finally, if given the option, select "all tweets" for those notifications.
This should have Twitter sent you an alert every time we send a Tweet from our account, thus letting you know whenever we're sending information your way.

Instagraminstagram.com/pathfindercac
  1. Navigate to our official Instagram feed: @PathfinderCAC (Pathfinder District - CAC BSA)
  2. “Follow” the feed, if you haven't already.
  3. Click the "Following" button to open the dropdown options menu.
  4. Click on "Notifications."
  5. Turn on notifications for Posts, and change Live Videos to All.
This should have Instagram sent you an alert every time we post to our account, thus letting you know whenever we're sending information your way.

YouTubeyoutube.com/channel/UCigZgQ4MA8JrpyU_0llpz3g
  1. Navigate to our official YouTube channel: Pathfinder District - CAC BSA
  2. Click on the "Subscribe" button.
  3. Click on the "bell" to activate notifications, and select "all" to receive notifications for all new videos.
This should have YouTube sent you an alert every time we post to our account, thus letting you know whenever we're sending information your way. We're not using the YouTube channel YET, but hope to begin doing so in the near future to help deliver even more information and content, and setting this up on your end now will ensure you know when we do start using it! (Also, once we have 100 "subscribers" we can get a shorter link for our channel instead of that messy one.)
PRO TIP: Doing all of these same steps for Crossroads of America Council's social media channels will help ensure you get even more information delivered directly to you from their channels as well!
