     School Value for Term 3
     Mana Whakahaere/Responsibility
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We have been very fortunate this past week by being able to dodge the unsettled weather and were able to hold our annual cross country events. In true cross country tradition, it was a muddy affair and our students showed their resilience and sportsmanship in competing in the event. My congratulations to everyone who took part and we look forward to the upcoming Kaipara competition being held down at Muriwai on Friday.

The NW Zone Netball competitions have also taken place this past fortnight and I am very pleased to report that our Year 8 team won the Senior competition and will go onto represent the zone at the Auckland Champs. Our Year 7 team also did very well by winning their pool. Well done to all the girls and the coaches on a great performance.

This week we are also celebrating Maths week, and part of the celebrations involves our very exciting Mathex competitions. Room 10 was the eventual victor of a very closely fought Year 7/8 competition.  Year 3/4 and Year 5/6 will have their competitions later in the week.  My congratulations to all the mathematicians who took part.

A very warm welcome to Mrs Angela Howard who has been appointed to replace Mrs Brown in Room 24. Mrs Howard, who will take on the Team Leader role in Year 1 is an experienced teacher from Kaukapakapa School and we wish her a very long and happy career at our school.

Voting for a Whanau BOT representative is now open and all parents at our school are eligible to vote. The voting is being held in the main office during office hours and a late voting session on Friday until 7pm. Voting closes on Tuesday next week at 3pm.

“Izzy, did you ask a good question today?”
The question that the mother of 1944 Nobel physics laureate Isidor Rabi asked him every day when he got home from school – quite different from the query of most other mothers in his neighbourhood: “So? Did you learn anything today?” Rabi says that his mother’s daily prod made him a scientist.”

Year 3/4 Chess Tournament

The children of Room 8 decided to host a chess tournament so they could enjoy some challenging chess.  There was an overwhelming response from Year 3 and 4 students and 70 children took part in the tournament.  We were all able to enjoy taking part in the competition with most of the children competing for the first time.  Through chess, the children were developing their logical thinking and problem-solving skills as well as dealing with the realities of winning and losing in a competition setting.  A representative from the Auckland Chess Association was on hand to provide support and was impressed by the good sportsmanship and competition displayed by the children.
