2019 Beaufort Walk for Water
September 21, 2019 9:00AM
Live Oaks Park, Port Royal, SC

UUFB and our Social and Environmental Justice Committee (SEJ) are again sponsoring a team for this year's Beaufort Walk for Water.  The SEJ team has donated $500 to the walk, which provide us with 10 free registrations.  If you would like to walk for free, please contact me, Kate Hudson, and I will sign you up! First come, first serve! If you want to register yourself and pay the $20 fee for an adult, you can simply go to the website, click on Register and then enter our team name to join.  Our Team Name, Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Beaufort is easy to remember! Students pay only $15,  youth pay $5, and children under five are free.

On September 21st, hundreds of us will take to the streets of Port Royal to bring safe water for life to thousands of men, women and children across the world.  This more than a walk. It's an event that will have impacts on people forever by providing lasting solutions that save lives. Join us as we walk so others won't have to.

Why Walk?

Every day, millions of women and children in developing countries walk over three miles to retrieve water for their family's daily needs.  In most cases, the water they collect is contaminated.  Every 37 seconds one person dies from water-related illnesses. This is a global water crisis.

Imagine that as little as $25 in the hands of Water mission could provide one person safe water for life.  A donation of $500 could provide a latrine for sanitation in a community.  Solar panels for an average-sized project are less than $1100.  How much will you help us raise this year?  It's time to #PickUpTheBucket.

Habitat for Humanity Faith Build Project Update

UUFB is partnered with other Beaufort area faith groups on the LowCountry Habitat for Humanity’s Faith Build House, located at 2523 Mossy Oaks Road.  The house’s exterior is now in place, so the remaining volunteer work is ground-level and mostly indoors.  The nature of the work will continue to change as the build progresses towards its targeted completion date around the end of August.

Effective July 18, LowCountry Habitat for Humanity has changed its volunteer sign-up process for the Faith Build.  Now, volunteers from any faith group can sign up directly on the Habitat site, in any combination, up to a limit of ten per day.  Those who have completed the 1-hour orientation program can sign up for any Tuesday through Saturday they wish.  However, we are identifying every Thursday and the occasional Saturday (8/3/19) as days for concentrations of UUFB volunteers.  Working together will be a great opportunity to act on our values, to build relationship among our own members and friends and others, in a no-proselytizing interfaith experience.

Those who are interested, and have not yet completed a 1-hour orientation program may attend the next session on Saturday August 10 at 10am, at the Habitat office (616 Parris Island Gateway).  Please call Lee McSavaney 843-522-3500 at the Habitat office to attend.

To Be Continued…
a column by Rev. Lori G. Hlaban

Dear Ones,

I want to thank everyone who was present at the service this past Sunday (Aug. 11th) for their wonderful discussions of questions about our UUFB covenant, and their comments afterward!

One comment I wanted to highlight was that some of it boils down to “don’t gossip.” It seems simplistic, and yet, that’s exactly right. When experts look at organizational systems, they often talk about the dangers of “triangulation” in communications.

Here’s an example of triangulation: Hal gets upset about something Quinn said. Instead of talking directly with Quinn, Hal calls up Bob and vents about it, trying to get Bob on their side. Then Hal calls up a few other friends, and continues to talk about how whatever Quinn said was so wrong – and maybe starts saying other things about Quinn. Instead of using direct line communication, Hal is creating triangles, hoping that Bob and their other friends will go back to Quinn with the message. Or maybe hoping that Bob and friends will call others and keep stirring the pot of resentment.

A good colleague of mine recently wrote an article titled “The Power of ‘We Don’t Say That Anymore,’” about how to gently remind people of language that is just not used anymore because it’s hurtful. I recommend it to you. You can read it at this link!

Just as people can be reminded of inappropriate language, they can also be reminded of inappropriate behavior. Perhaps we can practice saying, “We just don’t talk about others here,” and then offer to help the next Hal that approaches us to talk directly with Quinn. (And the Healthy Congregation Team is always ready to assist with untangling triangles!)

Remember: On September 8th we will celebrate our annual Water Service. If you have water to share from summer adventures, great! If you have water from your own backyard or tap, great! If you forget to bring any, we’ll have pitchers of water for you to pour from to add to our common bowl.

Hope to see you soon!

Blessings,
    Rev. Lori Hlaban

Hear ye! Hear ye!
It’s almost that time again.  The fall pledge campaign will start next month.  There will be Cottage Meetings held in our five Neighborhood Circles.  The schedule is below including the gracious hosts who have already started contacting their circle members.

September 5 at 6:00 pm – Char Lane
September 8 at 5:00 pm – Mary Mack
September 16 at 6:30 pm – Jennifer Rhodes
September 22 at 6:00 pm – Barb Banus
September 28 at 7:00 pm – Caren Ross

We hope you will be able to attend.  If you are not available to join your circle, you are welcome to go to one of the other meetings.  Please just let that host know.

These will be fun social events with food, entertainment and even door prizes.  And of course we will be handing out pledge forms for 2020.  If you start planning your pledge now you may be ready to complete the form that night and have it done!  This would be greatly appreciated.

We look forward to seeing you at one of these Cottage Meetings in September.  Pledging is an important part of Stewardship; it’s the Treasure that helps UUFB pursue its mission.

Warmest regards,
    Grace M Drake
    Stewardship Committee Chair
