Lake Worth Beach, Florida – On August 24, community volunteers and city employees will join Community Greening to plant more than 50 fruit and native trees on the 11th Avenue South Greenway. The planting continues the city’s partnership with Community Greening, an urban forestry non-profit, to increase the city’s tree canopy. On June 1, 2019 more than 75 volunteers came out to plant 100 trees in Howard Park.
Community Greening is a collective effort to improve the environment for people and nature. The organization is our local member of the Arbor Day Foundation’s Alliance for Community Trees. They envision an engaged community creating sustainable greenspaces and a vibrant tree canopy to equitably strengthen our environment, economy, society, and health. Since 2016, Community Greening has planted more than 3,500 trees with 3,000 volunteers from Boca Raton to West Palm Beach. In 2018, Community Greening was named the Outstanding Tree Advocacy Group of the Year by the Florida Urban Forestry Council.
Volunteers will add fruit and shade to the 11th Avenue South Greenway by planting dwarf mangos, wild mastics, paradisetrees, black ironwoods and buttonwoods. This family friendly event, from 9:30am until noon, is open to the public. Tree planters will meet at 1101 South “E” Street.
Mark Cassini, Community Greening’s co-founder, said, “We believe cities need to be proactive to respond to the ecological and human risks associated with a warming planet. Planting trees contributes to a resilient community that recognizes the vital importance of a healthy balance between people and nature.”
