Upcoming Exhibition: William Blake

William Blake: The Artist
11 September–2 February, 2020
Tate Britain, London

With over 300 original works, including his watercolours, paintings and prints, this is the largest show of Blake’s work for almost 20 years. It will rediscover him as a visual artist for the 21st century. Inside the exhibition will be an immersive recreation of the small domestic room in which Blake showed his art in 1809. In another room, Blake’s dream of showing his works at enormous scale will be made reality using digital technology. His personal struggles in a period of political terror and oppression, his technical innovation, his vision and political commitment, have perhaps never been more pertinent.

Upcoming Exhibition: Vija Celmins

Vija Celmins: Prints
12 September–26 October, 2019
Senior & Shopmaker, New York, NY

This exhibition will present selected prints dating from 1983 to 2016 by New York-based painter, Vija Celmins. Celmins (b. 1938, Riga, Latvia) has worked in the print medium since the early 1960s, meticulously rendering details of the natural environment through a careful exploration of process and mark making. Images on view will include the artist’s signature night skies, ocean surfaces and spider webs, subject matter that informs Celmins’ lifelong focus and exploration, a full spectrum of which will soon be on view in New York in her upcoming career retrospective at the Met Breuer.

Ongoing Exhibition: Critical Printing

Critical Printing
Through 5 January, 2020
Harvard Art Museums, Cambridge, MA

Critical Printing is an experimental course offered by Harvard’s Department of Art, Film, and Visual Studies that integrates studio and seminar instruction, allowing students to explore print as artists and scholars simultaneously. In this installation, as in the course, prints are organized not by medium or chronology, but by fundamental modes of critical thinking that emerge from the printmaking process. In the gallery, works are grouped around the following themes: Reversal, Pressure, Color Separation, Depth and Replicability.

Ongoing Exhibition: Sunrise

Polly Apfelbaum: Atomic Pinwheels and Other Mysteries
Through 14 March, 2020
Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art at WSU, Spokane, OR

This exhibition features unique prints of extraordinary complexity from this renowned American artist. Apfelbaum creates worlds of visual wonderment. The artist’s maximalist aesthetic posits a startling idea: beauty, exuberance, and chromatic energy are conduits to social unity. Her works convey a welcoming space where juxtaposition of seemingly incongruous colors and patterns find shared equilibrium hinting at a society in peace. Marking the artist’s first survey exhibition dedicated solely to her ambitious printmaking practice, more than 60 works on paper have been selected between the years 2004 and 2018. The exhibition will highlight a wide range of Apfelbaum’s printmaking methods with a collection of one-of-a-kind monoprints taking center stage.
