👋 Long time, no see! Glad to be back.

You'll see us again in your inbox twice a month for the rest of this year and into 2020, thanks in part to a generous grant from Rita Allen Foundation.

And what a week to be back!

So, let's get to it.

🌎 Massive 'Covering Climate Now' effort will be an important global case study

As more journalists turn their attention to covering climate change and its many impacts, the number of journalistic collaborations focused on the climate crisis are increasing.

Kristen Hare at Poynter collected many of them earlier this year in this post and The New York Times took a look at the trend in July. Plus there was this one in the Midwest, there have been collaborations in Florida, new ones in the Delaware and Ohio river watersheds, and multiple projects in New Jersey

But the biggest effort of them all, so far, is Covering Climate Now

Covering Climate Now is a project co-founded by The Nation and Columbia Journalism Review. It’s a temporary and separate collaborative journalism effort, and it has a simple, clear goal: Get media organizations around the world to publish or broadcast a week of strong climate stories in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York on Sept. 23.

That’s it.

Covering Climate Now has already signed on more than 170 partners worldwide and will be an important global case study in collaborative journalism. We see it as a smart collaboration for four reasons.

🏆 Which collaborative projects will win an Online Journalism Award this year?

As we mentioned, it's ONA week, which means it's also OJA week. Our friend and frequent collaborator Heather Bryant went through the Online Journalism Award finalists and and counted 22 of the finalists as collaborative journalism efforts.

Last year we counted 20, so it's a slight increase YOY. You can read about all the finalists here

And if you'll be at ONA, let us know if you want to meet up! The Center's director Stefanie Murray will be there, so drop her a note at murrayst@montclair.edu.

📚 ProPublica's new Collaborative Data Journalism Guide is ah-MAZE-ing

If you haven't seen the new Collaborative Data Journalism Guide from ProPublica yet, then stop reading this newsletter, click here and read the guide. It's fantastic.

Rachel Glickhouse, who coordinates Documenting Hate for ProPublica, wrote the guide. Although it's billed as a roadmap for collaborative data projects, the insights are useful for all kinds of collaborations. The "Establishing Partnerships" chapter is especially helpful.

We asked Rachel if she would do a webinar about the guide and the collaborative data tool that ProPublica is building, and she agreed to do so. (Yay! Thanks, Rachel!) Once we nail down a date, likely in October, we'll announce it in this newsletter.

💻 And speaking of training webinars ...

Also thanks to support from Rita Allen Foundation, we will be launching a series of training webinars this fall on topics related to collaborative journalism. We hope to announce the first round of dates by early October. Topics we are considering so far include:
  • Introduction to collaborative journalism.
  • How to design and structure a successful collaborative.
  • How to find partners for your collaborative journalism project.
  • Workflow and technology considerations for collaborative journalism projects.
  • Tracking the impact of your collaborative journalism project.
  • Deep-dive into ProPublica's collaborative data work.
If you have a particular topic you'd like to see, or one you would like to pitch, let us know! Email info@centerforcooperativemedia.org.

💰 Applications open for #HostwriterPrize

Hostwriter is a German-based open network that helps journalists collaborate across borders. It awards an annual Hostwriter Prize to promote cross-border collaboration among journalists, and now is the time to apply!

Hostwriter is now accepting applications for its 2019 Hostwriter Prize, which grants €5000 (that's just over $5,500) in awards for collaborative journalism projects between its members. The deadline to apply is Oct. 31. There are two categories: The Story Prize presents awards for collaborative projects that have already been published, and the Pitch Prize goes to two collaborative projects that are still being conceived. Visit the the Hostwriter Prize website for more info and to apply.

Where should we host the 2020 Collaborative Journalism Summit?

Yes, we will host a Collaborative Journalism Summit in 2020. Thanks to all of your hard work, we already have a lot to talk about!

We're narrowing down a list of potential host cities now, so if you want to pitch your city (or just share your preference), let us know ASAP! Email info@centerforcooperativemedia.org.

We're looking for places where collaboration has already taken place, and prefer places that have journalism organizations willing to host a pre-conference workshop onsite, like we did with Resolve Philadelphia just before the 2019 Summit.
