Boofest STL - Bookfest STL will be September 21 in the streets of the CWE. BookFest St. Louis is a celebration of the literary arts that will bring dozens of local, regional and national authors together for a one-day festival in the Central West End. Festival-goers will be able to enjoy author presentations, panel discussions, book signings and an array of family-friendly activities and programming throughout the day.

Thursday, August 22 - Bowood Farms - Perennial Maintenance: Dividing + Transplanting - Early fall is the best time to divide and transplant many perennials in your garden. Many perennials benefit from dividing which can increase blooms, reduce overcrowding and plant thinning, and provide more plants to add to your garden or give away to friends. Saturday, August 24 - Bowood Farms - Block Printing Workshop - In this workshop, you will create your own hand carved blocks to print custom designs and patterns. You’ll have free use of our specialized tools and inks, so that you can experiment on both paper and cotton muslin. Everyone will leave with several prints and your carved rubber blocks to continue printing at home! Price: $45
Saturday, August 24 - Bowood Farms - Botanical Plaster Prints - Create a series of three nature-inspired plaster prints with our guidance. We will use flowers, foliage and twigs to leave impressions on clay, followed by a pour of plaster. The resulting casts capture the delicate details of the botanicals. All materials and supplies are provided, and you’ll go home with a trio of prints. Price: $45

Wednesday, September 4 - World Chess Hall of Fame - Math and the Art of M.C. Escher - 6:30-8pm - Join us for a deep dive into the mathematical influences in the works on view in "M.C. Escher: Infinite Variations." Meet the authors of "Math and the Art of M.C. Escher" and learn about three kinds of geometries and how they appear in Escher’s work. Each week, Amy Woods will lead this watercolor workshop using our annuals and perennials as inspiration to create loose and unique paintings. Get to know your palette and explore what makes painting with watercolor enjoyable. By the end of the 4 week series you will have a portfolio filled with your colorful paintings. The Neighborhood Leadership Academy, created in 2002, connects resources at the University -- Creating Whole Communities and University of Missouri Extension -- with residents and neighborhoods throughout the metropolitan area who are interested in improving their communities. The Neighborhood Leadership Academy (NLA) provides hands-on leadership training that emphasizes community building principles and strategies, project planning, organizational leadership and management practices, and personal leadership skills. Participants are actively involved in their neighborhoods and represent communities from throughout the St. Louis region. Academy participants may be neighborhood association members, community leaders, resident volunteers, community-based organization staff, business owners, local government staff, and municipal elected officials. Participants who successfully complete the program receive a Certificate in Neighborhood Leadership from the Chancellor of the University of Missouri–St. Louis. Saturday September 14- Bowood Farms - Sashiko Embroidery - 10a – 1p - Taught by Casey York of Casey York Design. $60. Sashiko embroidery originated in Japanese textile arts, in which decorative straight stitch patterns were used to mend and reinforce homespun fabrics. Despite its traditional roots, the abstract motifs typical of this meditative hand-stitching technique lend themselves perfectly to modern design. In this workshop, Casey will introduce sashiko materials and the basic stitch and you will embellish a fabric square. All materials and supplies are provided, and you’ll go home with your project, sashiko needle and thread. Since this is a longer workshop, Café Osage will provide baked goods for a snack. Workshop is limited to 10 participants.
Friday, September 20 - Bowood Farms - Eco Printing - Friday September 20 - 10a-1p Taught by Anne Berman - Eco printing is the natural dye technique of transferring colorful evocations of botanicals onto paper and fabric. In this workshop, you will steam bundles of paper and fabric that are layered with flowers, leaves, and natural dyes. All materials and supplies are provided, but you are welcome to bring your own plant clippings. Workshop is limited to 8 participants. $50.

Saturday, September 21 - Bowood Farms - Create a Dried Floral Cloche - 10a-12pm - Taught by Anne Berman. Build a dreamy preserved garden in a cloche with dried flowers from this summer’s harvest. You’ll have a lovely assortment of dried flowers and grasses to choose from, including locally grown straw flower, celosia and globe amaranth to name a few. We will help you layer each element to create a whimsical and airy display piece for your home. All materials and supplies are provided. Workshop is limited to 12 participants. $50
Saturday September 21 - Bowood Farms - Cyanotype - 2p – 3p - Cyanotype, or “sun printing” is a photographic printing process that produces a stunning cyan-blue print through sun exposure. Learn how to mix the chemicals, coat materials with photosensitive emulsion, and create one-of-a-kind contact prints utilizing the sun. Participants will make and take home several Cyanotype prints on paper. This workshop involves the use of chemicals, please dress accordingly in old clothing and shoes that may be stained. Workshop is limited to 12 participants. $30.
Thursday, September 26 - Bowood Farms - Knife Skills with Cafe Osage - 2 PM – 3:30 PM - Taught by Scott Davis - Join Cafe Osage’s chef, Scott Davis, in this hands-on workshop focused on basic knife skills. Scott will demonstrate fundamental cuts and coach your technique while you practice. You’ll learn tips for maintaining and sharpening your knives and enjoy light bites at the end of the class. You are encouraged to bring your own knife, but we will provide knives to use as well. Workshop is limited to 8 participants. $45.
Friday September 27 or Saturday September 28 - Bowood Farms - Shibori Dyeing - 10 AM – 12 PM. Taught by Anne Berman. $45. Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting, binding or bunching cloth and dyeing it with indigo. Each student will receive two yards of fabric to dye- that can be made into napkins, a table runner, tea towels or a pillow cover … the possibilities are endless! You will be able to allow your creativity to flow and produce a one of a kind product. This workshop involves the use of indigo dye and is held outside, please dress accordingly in old clothing that may be stained. Workshop is limited to 10 participants.

Sunday, September 29 - Bowood Farms - Forest Park Owls: Hiding In Plain Sight - 11 AM – 12:30 PM - Taught by Mark H.X. Glenshaw - $10. Mark H.X. Glenshaw is an award-winning naturalist who has closely observed and documented the lives of Great Horned Owls in Forest Park, in St. Louis since December 2005. Mark’s talk, Forest Park Owls: Hiding In Plain Sight, will cover how he found these owls, basic facts about the species, and the different behaviors he has been able to see and document with photos and videos to illustrate these behaviors. You may have heard about the owls and Mark's work with them from the regular media coverage they receive-now here is your opportunity to learn more about the owls in person.
Cathedral Concerts announces their 2019 - 2020 season - Saint Louis Cathedral Concerts, an independent nonprofit that brings sacred and classical music to St. Louis from world-class musicians, releases its concert lineup for the 27th season.
