The Downtown Programme will create a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau.

This is one of Auckland’s biggest projects.
By 2021, downtown will look dramatically different – a vibrant, transformed environment for all to enjoy.

Our Pick of the Week!

The significant ‘A Maori Figure in a Kaitaka Cloak’ sculpture created in the mid-1960s by New Zealand artist Molly Macalister was carefully removed from his current site this morning, and now rests in storage for safe keeping while the transformation of Quay Street is underway.

For over 50 years, this three-metre-high 840kg bronze rangatira has held a dignified and imposing presence in the Downtown area, welcoming countless workers, commuters and visitors over this time, and reminding all of the important place Mana Whenua hold in our city.

He will be welcomed back to his place overlooking the Waitematā once the works are completed.
