CHUMASH

Parshas Va'eschanan - Chamishi with Rashi

Moshe Rabbeinu is preparing the Yidden to have hatzlacha in Eretz Yisroel!

Moshe Rabbeinu reminds the Yidden about how much Yiras Shomayim they had from Matan Torah! Hashem said, “If only they would ALWAYS feel this way!”

The Yidden should be very careful to do the mitzvos of Hashem all the time, and then they will be able to live for a long time in Eretz Yisroel!

TEHILLIM

72 - 76

Today’s kapitelach are Ayin-Beis to Ayin-Vov.

In Kapitel Ayin-Gimmel (73), there is a posukMi Li Bashamayim Ve’imcha Lo Chofatzti Ba’aretz.” “Do I need Shomayim? And I don’t want what’s with You in the world.”

The Tzemach Tzedek said that the Alter Rebbe used to say that this posuk means that he doesn’t want what’s WITH Hashem, like Gan Eden or Olam Haba. He just wanted Hashem Himself!

How does a person connect with Hashem Himself? By doing a mitzvah in this Gashmiyus world! The Chachomim say that one hour of teshuvah and Maasim Tovim in this world is better than the whole Olam Haba! In Olam Haba, neshamos enjoy the light of Hashem, but through a mitzvah in this world, the neshama connects with the ESSENCE of Hashem.

TANYA

Igeres Hakodesh Siman Daled

Learning and davening and going to farbrengens makes us feel different. We get inspired and want to have more Yiddishkeit!

But do we want Yiddishkeit for a reason, or is Yiddishkeit our life, and we feel that we want and NEED it?

Wanting things for reasons is from our Chitzonius Halev. Wanting things because they are what our life is all about is from Pnimius Halev.

The Alter Rebbe said that if our whole life is busy with other things, our Yiddishkeit will only be able to be in our Chitzonius Halev. Our Pnimius Halev will be in Golus in the Gashmius!

The only way to get it out of Golus, so that our whole LIFE can be Yiddishkeit, is if Hashem takes it out!

What makes Hashem take it out? When we give tzedakah! We take what we put our life into — for example, the money we earned — and give it to Hashem by giving tzedakah! Then Hashem gives us a present, and takes our Pnimius Halev out of Golus!

Today the Alter Rebbe tells us that through giving tzedakah, which takes our Pnimius Halev out of Golus, ALL of our Yiddishkeit can be done in a different way!

Once Hashem takes our Pnimius Halev out of Golus (since we gave Tzedakah), then we can do ALL of our mitzvos, and learn ALL of our Torah, with our WHOLE heart!

This is also why Tzedakah is called Shalom, because it makes Shalom between Hashem and Yidden.

A Yid has a piece of Hashem inside, and it makes Hashem sad when it is in Golus. When it comes out of Golus, Hashem is happy, and there is Shalom between Hashem and Yidden!

The Alter Rebbe tells the Chassidim to give Tzedakah, especially to the Chassidim in Eretz Yisroel — the land which is so close to Hashem.

HAYOM YOM

Yud-Daled Menachem Av

The Rebbe reminds us that there is no Tachanun in Mincha, because tonight is Chamisha-Asar B’Av!

On Yud-Daled Menachem Av in the year Tof-Shin-Alef, it was 50 years since the Rebbe Rashab told the Frierdiker Rebbe, who was then 11 years old, that he should start writing down the stories that he tells him.

At that time, the Frierdiker Rebbe told this story:

When the Tzemach Tzedek started to write words of Torah and Chassidus, the Alter Rebbe told him that the Mishna says that you should get a friend to learn with — Ukenei Lecha Chaver. If you change the nekudos of the word “Ukenei,”, you can read it as “Vekaneh Lecha Chaver,” a PEN should be your friend! From this we see that it is important to write things down when you learn!

The Rebbe Rashab once said that he heard ANOTHER way to read the Mishna, in the name of the Alter Rebbe: The “pen” of your heart is what should be your friend in learning. That means that you should use your heart when you learn, and feel that what you’re learning is important for your life!

SEFER HAMITZVOS

Shiur #10 - Mitzvas Lo Saasei #256, #301, #304, #305

In today’s Sefer Hamitzvos, we learn 4 more mitzvos about how to treat other people:

1) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #256) We can’t make an almanah (widow) or a yasom (orphan) feel bad.

We learn this from a posuk in Parshas Mishpatim: כָּל אַלְמָנָה וְיָתוֹם לֹא תְעַנּוּן

2) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #301) We are not allowed to go around talking about other people — even if the things are true, and even if we aren’t saying not nice things! This is called rechilus. When people share information with other people, they probably don’t want everyone to know about it.

This mitzvah also includes Motzi Shem Ra, saying something not nice that ISN’T true about another person. (In today’s Rambam, we see that this mitzvah also includes Lashon Hara, saying something true that isn’t nice.)

We learn this from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: לֹא תֵלֵךְ רָכִיל בְּעַמֶּיךָ

3) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #304) We aren’t allowed to do nekamah — to look for a way to pay someone back for something not nice they did to us. (For example, if you went to a kid and asked to borrow his ball, but he said no, nekamah would mean that the next time he asks you to borrow something, you say no, to pay him back for not lending you his ball.)

We learn this from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: לֹא תִקֹּם

4) (Mitzvas Lo Saasei #305) We aren’t allowed to do netirah — to stay angry at someone who did something not nice to us, even if we don’t take nekamah! (So if the kid didn’t share his ball, we can’t say to him, “I’m nicer than you because I’m going to let you play with my toy even though YOU wouldn’t let me play with YOURS!”)

We learn this from a posuk in Parshas Kedoshim: לֹא תִקֹּם וְלֹא תִטֹּר

RAMBAM

Hilchos Deios - Hilchos Talmud Torah

Perek Vov: In today’s Rambam, we learn that the people you are friends with, and the people you spend time with, are very important! Make sure your friends are the kind of people you want to be like!

Perek Zayin: The Rambam also teaches us many things about Ahavas Yisroel. We need to care about another person’s respect like we do about our own, and be careful with another person’s money the way we care about our own.

Now we start Hilchos Talmud Torah:

Perek Alef: We also start learning the halachos of learning Torah today! One of the halachos we learn is that a father has a mitzvah to make sure his kids learn Torah! (The Alter Rebbe says in the Shulchan Aruch that this is not just for boys, but a Tatty also needs to make sure his girls learn too. And even though the mitzvah is given to the Tatty, both parents work together to make sure that the children get the best chinuch there could be!)

RAMBAM PEREK ECHOD

Hilchos Keilim - Perek Gimmel

In today’s Rambam, we are learning about how Keilim (containers or utensils) become tomei:

Today we learn about keilim that aren’t supposed to be moved, like a big dresser. They can’t become tomei.

INYANA D'YOMA

Ahavas Yisroel

In today’s Hayom Yom, we learned about the stories that the Frierdiker Rebbe wrote down.

At the time the Hayom Yom was written, many of these stories had never been printed. Now, Boruch Hashem, they are, in the Frierdiker Rebbe’s sichos and zichronos!

We can learn many things from these stories. One very important thing we can learn is about Ahavas Yisroel. We can see this from the following story:

A bochur once came to the Rebbe in Yechidus, and asked what he could do to make his Ahavas Yisroel stronger. The Rebbe told him to read the sichos of the Frierdiker Rebbe, and this would help him!

TEFILLAH

Korban Tomid

The second paragraph that starts “Vayedaber” is about the Korban Tomid.

After cleaning off the ashes from the Mizbeiach in the morning, the kohanim were ready to bring the first korban of the day, the Korban Tomid. This korban was a sheep that was brought as an Olah, meaning that the entire animal was burned on the Mizbeiach, and no meat was left for the kohanim to eat. The Korban Tomid (“tomid” means “always”) was brought twice every day, once in the morning and once in the afternoon. The Korban Tomid was a kapara for certain aveiros that the Yidden did, and helped Hashem forgive them.

Our davening Shacharis and Mincha is instead of bringing the Korban Tomid in the morning and afternoon. We can’t bring the actual korban, but we bring ourselves close to Hashem by connecting to Him in tefillah. By saying the words of the Torah describing the Korban Tomid, Hashem will also count it as if we are bringing this important korban!

On a day that we say Tachanun, we also say a short tefillah before, asking Hashem that our davening should be mechaper our aveiros just as the Korban Tomid was mechaper on the aveiros of the Yidden.

HALACHOS HATZRICHOS

Learning Halachos Hatzrichos

There are many mitzvos that are easy to learn just by watching other people do them. For example, it’s not hard to learn how to shake the Lulav and Esrog properly.

But other mitzvos are complicated. Unless a person actually learns the halachos about them, he will probably not always be doing them right.

For example, we know that we are not allowed to talk during davening. But what if we hear thunder in the middle of Ashrei — do we stop and say the bracha? Or what if we are davening Shema slowly and we hear the Chazan starting to repeat Shemoneh Esrei — can we answer Amen? The answer to these questions are part of the halachos of Hefsek BeTefillah, when we can interrupt our davening.

We know that pens and markers are muktza on Shabbos. But what do we do if we find a pen in the box of mentchies? And what do we do if we picked up a pen by mistake? This is part of the halachos of muktza, and you won’t always know what to do unless you learn these halachos!

The Rebbe wanted everyone to learn the halachos that we need to live properly as a Yid. Starting from the youngest grades, all the way up to kollel and in the shuls, everyone should have daily shiurim in these halachos.

GEULAH U'MOSHIACH

Hesech Hadaas

The Chachomim tell us that Moshiach will come “Behesech Hadaas,” when we are not thinking about it.

But what is that supposed to mean? We know from Rambam that we are ALWAYS supposed to be waiting for Moshiach to come — Achakeh Lo Bechol Yom Sheyavo!

One explanation is that Moshiach will come in a time that doesn’t make sense — a time when our daas might tell us that Moshiach shouldn’t come. Even though it wouldn’t seem like we deserve Moshiach, the Gemara tells us to have emunah (which is higher than daas) that Moshiach will come right away!

So if someone thinks that the world isn’t ready for Moshiach, we see from this Gemara that this is the PERFECT time, Behesech Hadaas! With the koach of our emunah in Moshiach, Moshiach will come right away!
