State’s physician workforce board receives new name

Effective July 1, the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce officially became the new name for the state’s former physician workforce board.

The new name aligns with the expanded scope of the Board's loan repayment and data collection programs, which now include dentists, physician assistants, and advanced practice registered nurses.

The board member structure also was amended to add a dentist, a physician assistant, and a nurse practitioner, when vacancies become available.

All changes were in Senate Bill 207, which Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law in April. Click here to read a copy of the bill.

The Board’s website and “Contact Us” email address have updated as well. The new website is https://healthcareworkforce.georgia.gov, and the new email address is gbhcw@dch.ga.gov.

Board’s website receives face-lift

At the end of July, the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce overhauled its website as a part of the Georgia Technology Authority’s plan to transition all state agencies to the new Drupal-8 platform.

The project was completed in collaboration with GTA's Digital Services team, which offers web and application development, data sharing services, and information technology consulting for state government agencies.

The Board’s new web address is https://healthcareworkforce.georgia.gov.

Governor appoints new rural physician member to Board

On June 4, Gov. Brian Kemp appointed James W. Barber, M.D., to serve on the Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce. Barber replaces Mark Hanly, M.D., whose term expired.

A native of Georgia, Barber has lived in Coffee County for almost 15 years. After earning his undergraduate degree from Georgia Tech and his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, he completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Georgia Baptist Medical Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Barber is an orthopaedic surgeon with Southeastern Orthopaedics who specializes in total knee replacements, sports injuries, arthroscopy, and bone/joint injuries. He enjoys using new innovating equipment and serves on numerous medical boards to help shape the future of healthcare for his patients.

Dates announced for Fall practice opportunity fairs

The Georgia Board of Health Care Workforce cosponsors job fairs each year in conjunction with graduate medical education programs to link resident physicians with employment opportunities around the state. Included in this Fall's tour are confirmed stops at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah on October 3, Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta on October 16, and the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta on November 13.

“We hope these fairs provide these up-and-coming physicians the opportunity to connect with hospitals scattered throughout the state,” said Antonio Rios, M.D., the Board's chairperson. “Since several of the hospitals participating are from rural areas, these fairs align with the board’s mission to support medical education programs that encourage doctors to practice in medically underserved communities.”

Invited participants are resident physicians of Georgia-based GME programs and any hospital or health system recruiting for practice opportunities in Georgia. Registration is currently underway.

More information about the fairs and registration can be found by clicking here.
