"BLACKS AND JEWS"
"Blacks & Jews" cuts through stereotypes and re-examines the histories of two highly oppressed peoples from the perspectives of activists on both sides.
During the 1960s Civil Rights movement, people of African descent and people of the Jewish faith fought together for equal rights. With the waning of that movement though, differences in economic status caused both groups to turn inward. Positions hardened around such divisive issues as affirmative action in schools, anti-Semitism among some African American leaders, and perceptions of Jewish influence in Hollywood. Those differences occasionally led to violent uprisings between blacks and Jews, such as in New York's Crown Heights neighborhood in the 1990s.
After the film, join a local panel of individuals to speak to the impact of intersectional relationships between communities here in South Bend.
Public participation at this film event is free and highly encouraged. Our Fall 2019 crhc:film series is made possible through a grant from Indiana Humanities in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Humanities.
