Train Deaths Lead to Fencing

The board of directors in charge of Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, or SMART for short, voted last month to fund more pedestrian safety fencing at railroad crossings after five people were struck by SMART trains in a three-week period. Since the rail system began operating in August 2017, there have been at least nine pedestrian fatalities, of which five have been ruled suicides. A $500,000 contract for 30 Z-gates, which require pedestrians to weave through chain-link fences before they are able to access rail tracks, has been awarded, and all are supposed to be in place by the end of this year.
State Suicide Prevention Plan

The Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, which reports to the California Legislature, has been charged with updating the state's suicide prevention plan. The original plan is 10 years old and much has changed since then. A subcommittee of the commission is holding meetings across the state to consider various revisions. The current draft copy of the plan can be accessed here. Comments can be addressed to Miriam Silliman at miriam.silliman@mhsoac.ca.gov.
Santa Clara County Spotlight

A recent editorial in the San Jose Mercury News and East Bay Times applauded Santa Clara County's suicide prevention efforts, most notably the creation of an integrated public sector health care system. Santa Clara has the lowest suicide rate (7.5 per 100,000 people) of any county in California. A community awareness campaign that targets middle-aged men, a partnership with schools on crisis response policies, ordinances that promote safe gun storage, implementation of a mobile response crisis team, and comprehensive data collection are some of the features.
