In 1927, Paramount Pictures purchased 2,700 acres of the old Rancho Las Virgenes for use as a "movie ranch." The studio built numerous large-scale sets on the ranch over the years. The area is now part of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area (the largest urban national park in the country), which restored the western town set built by the studio in the 1950s.
🤠
The structures suffered near-total destruction during the November 2018 Woolsey fire (88% of the National Park burned). The Westworld Church and the train station were the only two buildings spared by the fire.
🤠
We will set up our easels facing the Westworld church, framed by a gorgeous oak tree and against unbuilt rolling hills.
🤠
We will submit our paintings to the OPEN CALL organized by The City of Malibu Cultural Arts Commission asking local artists to create work related to the Woolsey Fire. A selection of the work will be featured in the Malibu City Hall.
Submission deadline is this Sunday.
