Lynn Bailey - Printmaker : Newsletter 27
Welcome to Newsletter 27

I’ve had a very enjoyable summer so far. I was delighted with how things went on the Cathedral Green for the Exeter Craft Festival. It was rather hot and sunny, but quite as sweltering as last year. Perfect weather to bring out the visitors. And while my garden has now been appreciating the extra douses of rain we have had lately, I do hope that things pick up so that we have some reliably sunny weather in time for Devon Open Studios.

Here’s a quick list of what’s in this newsletter:-

The Amazing Fern mono-print teatowels I printed went down so well at the Exeter Craft Festival I have decided to print some more. The two new ferns used give them their own look and I managed to print 10 in one day without the fern disintegrating. If you missed out first time round and would like to reserve one do let me know. (£12 each).

Some of the Hedgehog Tote bags, Lavender and Bee bags and the hedgehog and bee posters I created as fundraising items for the Devon Wild Life Trust are also still available. These are priced at £15, OR just £12 if you don’t want me to donate £5 to the Devon Wildlife Trust.

As a Special for Devon Open Studios
I am hand-tinting some of my small mono-chrome drypoint prints. These can be done on demand, while you wait. Or put your request in so that it's ready for when you arrive. You can see the range of small drypoint prints available for added colour in my Etsy shop "Drypoint" section. For some prints there may be only one or two left! No extra charge (most are £30).

ALSO – When you see a little D amongst the symbols at each person’s entry, this means they are doing demonstrations. While I do the messy, inky work with the presses at Double Elephant, there is quite a lot I can manage in my studio. Because I will have sooo much stuff out on display, and my studio is rather small to start with, I shall only be working on a range of small tasks. Nevertheless, these will be helpful for people wishing to understand by processes better.

There is no knowing exactly what I will be up to at the moment of your visit, but I could be working on any or all of the following:-

  • Creating a collagraph plate
  • Creating a drypoint plate
  • Hand-tinting drypoint prints
  • Creating a wood engraving
  • Hand printing a wood engraving
  • Creating a silk mezzotint plate

I have also made a few special discount codes that people can take away to get 10% off artwork from my Etsy shop...

Hope to see you soon!

2. Devon Guild Summer Show.

20 July - 8 September
Riverside Mill, Bovey Tracey, Devon, TQ13 9AF
Open daily, 10am-5.30pm. Free entry.

The Summer Show at the Devon Guild of Craftsmen is an exhibition of new work by Guild Members and having been on the selection committee myself a few years back, I know how tough it is to get your work through. I am therefore delighted to have the one piece I sent it selected for the show. It is a new work that is also a continuation of the work I’ve been doing about Blanket Bogs on Dartmoor (See Newsletter #18 to read about the Magnificent Mires Project).

The exhibition is on until the 8th September, so still time to vote for your favourite!

3. RAMM Shop.

Did you know that Double Elephant members keep a browser stocked up with artwork in the Royal Albert Memorial Museum shop?
This just happens to be an award winning museum shop. Exeter Museum invites us to submit fresh work for sale that reflects their current exhibitions. This time round the call out was for the theme of Devon and Dartmoor landscapes and I have had three works selected. One similar to the one in the Devon Guild Summer Show and two little landscapes based on a winter walk I’ve had in the farmland on the edge of Dartmoor. All of these prints have flowed out of my experimentations for developing “Alternatives to Etching”. The readily available materials that I’m using to create the look and feel of an etching without the stress, chemicals and expensive metals involved with etching are something that I’m going to explore further.

4. Editioning.

I have had the privilege to undertake a few editioning jobs so far this year. These have all be very different in character and were requested for very different reasons.
The most recent was quite a quick, straightforward job of printing as many black and white prints from a copper etching plate in two hours. The resulting 10 prints then became the edition size. The artist in question no longer has access to her old etching press and is at the stage in her career when it makes sense to employ someone else to do the messy work. I take pleasure in being able to produce the edition more efficiently and cleanly than the artist often can do for themselves.

Earlier this year I had the honour of printing from some delightful vintage wood engraving blocks. These belonged to the family of Mary Skempton. There were quite a few of Mary’s woodblocks that they hadn’t got a proof of anymore and requested to have just one or two prints taken from a selection of wood engraving blocks before the blocks were to be sent to a Manchester museum. The blocks had been cut at various times from in the 1930s-1980s and although they are roughly "type-height" they actually vary quite a bit, so to keep the job as time efficient as possible, I first ordered the blocks according to thickness. I then just needed to add a bit more packing material as I went along.
Some of the blocks were double sided as well! .... But such a lovely job to do.

Another editioning job I’ve been able to fit in this year was a little more collaborative. I spent a day working with Jilly Sutton, who when not creating wonderfully sculptural woodcuts usually creates sculptures that are inspired by the ancient trees and woodland that surround her studio on the banks of the River Dart in Devon. Again efficiency was of the essence. We needed to take prints from several images created with carved wooden shapes where subtle colour and textured embossing was a key feature. In order to avoid the extra time that would be involved with me proofing to Jilly’s specifications and then to have her return to the workshop to approve a proof for me to match to, we agreed that it would be more effective to have Jilly in the workshop alongside me making decisions regarding layout and colour etc. The extra pair of hands also helped with what are quite sizable pieces.  Jilly Sutton’s sculptures have been exhibited internationally and are in public and private collections in the UK and abroad.
