Changing WHS Staff

Dannielle McCoy and Tony Bate have been assisting Kristy Adams since the departure of Melinda Chylinski and Daniel Leo earlier this year. Unfortunately, they will also be leaving soon as permanent replacements have been finalised.

Dannielle's last day will be today (16th August) and Tony's 23rd. A new WHS Advisor and a WHS Officer will commence in the later half of the month.

Please be patient while the team undergoes another transition, hopefully the last one for a while!

About the WHS Unit

New WHS Website

While the majority of the University recently transitioned to the new website, not everyone could transition at once. The WHS pages were slightly delayed but we have been working hard on getting them up and running. Keep your eyes peeled next week for a brand new look!

AED/CPR Confidence Sessions

HealthCorp has begun developing AED/CPR Confidence Sessions which aim to provide awareness around the importance of AED’s in the event of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, how to use an AED, some basic CPR guidelines, and a different First Aid tip each session.

CPR/AED Confidence Workshop 1 was conducted in May 2019. To register interest for future workshops, please email nallen@device.com.au.

ChemAlert v5.0 Upgrade

On 1st May, the University upgraded from ChemAlert v4.1 to v5.0. There are many improved functionalities as well as a new look and feel, however general use is not too different. Those who are used to working with the old version should be able to find what they are looking for in the new version with some trial and error alongside logical thinking.

15 people attended the Hazardous Chemicals Awareness and ChemAlert training course held by PODS in late July. Some of the participants were new to ChemAlert and some were users of previous versions, but all had positive feedback about the system.

The next training is scheduled for 3rd October. Staff can register interest in WebKiosk while students will need to complete the Course Nomination for Students Form and submit to PODS on 4221 5361 or pods@uow.edu.au.

Chemical Waste Store

A recent review of waste management processes, involving stakeholders across the University, uncovered non-compliance issues with the current chemical waste store in Building 15. A risk assessment was completed and suitable remediation options considered. This was tabled at the WHS Committee meeting on 13th August and a working party has been formed based on the Hazardous Waste Management Contacts at the Wollongong campus to provide feedback and attempt a resolution that is suitable for everyone.

First Aid Kit and AED Register

Dannielle McCoy and Tony Bate have been working hard to develop a University wide register of first aid kits and automated external defibrillators (AEDs). In the past, some kits have not been serviced as expected and this has lead to contents being missing or out of date when needed for treatment. Thank you to everyone who has assisted in gathering this information.

Building Warden Register

Tony Bate has also been busy reviewing and updating the register of building wardens. Many gaps were identified with buildings not adequately covered by trained personnel. This review coincided with the introduction of online Building Warden Training. Since the review took place, approximately 70 people have signed up for the online training.
