On Monday I had the privilege to announce Pam Kelly as the new Chief Constable of Gwent Police.

Pam Kelly began her policing career as a volunteer police officer and has 25 years’ experience policing in Wales.

She has been serving as the Deputy Chief Constable of Gwent Police for the last two years and in that time she has demonstrated her commitment to the people of Gwent, and her fellow officers, time and again.

She came through a tough selection process as an outstanding candidate and I was pleased that the Gwent Police and Crime Panel supported my recommendation to appoint her as Chief Constable.

August’s meeting of the Gwent Police and Crime Panel, which includes the confirmation of the new Chief Constable and scrutiny of our monitoring of Gwent Police’s annual performance report, is now available to view on YouTube.

Stop and search

One of the first major issues the new Chief Constable and I will be meeting to discuss is the UK Government’s plans to make it easier for police forces to utilize stop and search powers.

Stop and search is a powerful crime prevention tool but it must be used properly.

There will no doubt be some people in our communities who will feel threatened by these proposals, and it will be our job to engage with these groups to understand their concerns and offer reassurance.

In the coming weeks we will be working closely with our partners and the G10 group to ensure that all understand these changes and the implications they have for our communities.

Summer events

My team will be out and about this weekend at the Bedwelty Agricultural Show in Llancaiach Fawr, Caerphilly, on Saturday, and the Caldicot 999 event at Caldicot Castle on Sunday.

If you are out and about at these events over the weekend then pop over and say hello!

Members sought for adult advisory panel

The Children’s Commissioner is currently recruiting to her adult advisory panel.

The roles are ideal for people who want to make a difference to the lives of children and young people in Wales.
