DVA and Volunteer Dundee

DVA is delighted to announce that Eric Knox has been appointed as CEO of a rebranded DVA incorporating Volunteer Dundee. He will take up the position on Tuesday 1st October 2019. Eric brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from the third and statutory sector and will be a huge asset to the organisation going forward.

Eric is looking forward to his role in the newly branded organisation, working to bring the two organisations together, for the target date.

DVA Board wish to thank Christine Lowden for her dedication to DVA and the people of Dundee and wish her well in her retirement.

Dundee Social Enterprise Network

We are sad to say that Julie Farr Chief Executive of DSEN has very recently moved on to a new role nearer her home in Fife.
Angus and Susan will still be available however to assist with any queries.  As an interim measure some of our Board members will also be available.  Fergus Storrier will be assisting with member support, Beverley Gibb will be working and connecting with the Third Sector Interface and Derek Marshall will take care of organisational matters.

Family Sustainment Service

Launched in April of this year, the Family Sustainment Service aims to support families in private rented accommodation who are having financial difficulties and have or are at risk of accruing rent arrears.

Living with poverty can make family life very hard. Parenting can be stressful and without financial resources, it can feel like an uphill struggle for our families. When poverty is combined with poor mental health, domestic abuse, drug and alcohol problems, trauma from your own childhood and/or learning disabilities then the ability to hold a family together can feel almost impossible.

Working in partnership with the DWP, Dundee City Council, Shelter and Safe Deposit Scotland, the purpose of this service is to support these families, ensure Landlords receive all monies due to them and to ultimately prevent homelessness and the trauma that goes with this.

Having already successfully helped over 10 families, we are now looking to accept new referrals and as such would be grateful if you could circulate our information to all of your team.

Unfortunately, financial hardship is a growing problem, however, we hope that by working in collaboration with agencies such as yourselves, we can get the help and support to these families which will prevent them from sadly becoming a financial burden to their Landlord.

DSEN member shortlisted in Chamber Business Champion Awards

We're delighted to share that The Circle is one of six shortlisted organisations in the inaugural Chamber of Commerce awards which are now open to public voting until Friday 23rd August

The Circle exists to champion our community. By providing accommodation, facilities, consultancy and training we are enabling people and organisations to thrive in Dundee & Angus.

The Circle are supporting organisations who are addressing inequalities, exclusion and adversity while providing employment, growing income and launching innovative new programmes. If the aim of responsible business is to bring economic prosperity and opportunities by meeting and exceeding the requirements of our customers, then The Circle are championing that approach in Dundee & Angus and reaching the communities who need the region to deliver the most.

Recovery Friendly Dundee aims to support everyone in their local community by raising awareness of the wider issues and stigma faced by people in recovery.

Based on your experience, what do you think needs to happen for Dundee to be a Recovery Friendly City?

We are looking for individuals and groups across Dundee to get involved by answering the above question via our survey. As well as this we encourage you to do this creatively such as through photography, art, drama, dance, music, poetry or you can simply tell us what you think in the best way for you. We are able to provide support to help you take part – just get in touch.
This is not a one-off consultation - we will be looking to showcase what everyone has produced at an event around June next year and will be looking to build ongoing relationships with you to help take actions towards Dundee becoming a Recovery Friendly City.

We will be approaching a range of groups and organisations across Dundee over the next few months but to make sure we don’t miss you – please e-mail robin.falconer@dundeecity.gov.uk or call 01382 435854 if you are interested in getting involved!

Dundee Taxi Consultation: Dundee Council follows a policy of limiting the number of taxi licenses across the city. This means the Council are required to undertake regular surveys of passenger demand to ensure the limit set is at the correct level. Jacobs (formally CH2M)  has been commissioned by Dundee City Council to carry out an independent study of taxi and private hire operations in Dundee.

Glasgow Caledonian University study: Are you a regular drinker? Have you experienced a traumatic event? We would like to speak to men and women over the age of 18 as part of a study at Glasgow Caledonian University. The aim of the study is to interview people who drink about how they believe alcohol affects memory, and how these beliefs may affect their alcohol use. This will help researchers better understand the relationship between alcohol and mental health, helping improve treatment for people who are experiencing psychological trauma. Interviews take place on a one-to-one basis in a private room, both in Glasgow and Dundee. Your identity will remain anonymous and all volunteers will recieve a £10 Amazon voucher. For more information, please email benjamin.butterworth@gcu.ac.uk

Children in Scotland: Co-Convenor of the CPG on Children and Young People. We are looking for a group of up to 4 children and young people aged 8-25 to take on this role to trial having a group of children and young people become young co-convenors for the group. If you have questions or would like to not your interest please get in touch with Chris Ross, cross@childreninscotland.org.uk & Sarah Paterson, spaterson@youthlinkscotland.org by Wednesday 21st August.
The Dundee TSI newsletter reaches a readership across all sectors in Dundee. If you have a story, job vacancy or event that represents the great work you are doing we would like to hear and share them.
