Golden Rice uprooting commemorated: Highlights on global day of action against Golden Rice

From Manila to Dhaka, the resounding call of farmers, consumers and development networks to stop Golden Rice field trials and commercialization were issued through various forms and activities, commemorating the
historic Golden Rice uprooting in Pili, Camarines Sur six years ago.

On August 8, various activities were simultaneously held in the Philippines, Indonesia and Bangladesh.

Police forcibly disperse Indigenous Peoples Day action in Jayapura, youth activists detained

Around 16 student activists from the Indonesian People's Front for West Papua (FRI-WP) and the Papuan Student Community (KMP) of Ternate City, who were arrested and harrassed by the Ternate City Police, have now been released. Whereabouts of two Papuan youth protesters remain unknown.

Golden rice beta carotene disappears fast: study

 

After studies have confirmed that vitamin A, converted from beta carotene, is very low in genetically modified golden rice, new evidence shows that the rice is also unable to hold the biochemical for long after harvest.

UN climate change report: land clearing and farming contribute a third of the world’s greenhouse gases

The pressure to increase agricultural production has helped push about a quarter of the Earth’s ice-free land area into various states of degradation via loss of soil, nutrients and vegetation. Simultaneously, biodiversity has declined globally, largely because of deforestation, cropland expansion and unsustainable land-use intensification.

Defending Amazon against agribusiness can be dangerous


In various parts of the Amazon, parish teams and the Brazilian bishops’ Pastoral Land Commission help communities defend their land against loggers, ranchers and industrial-scale farms. The work can be dangerous, because land conflicts are often violent, especially in the state of Para, where the Notre Dame de Namur Sisters work.
