Dear Friend,
I hope you have had a summer full of renewal, rest and time with the people you love. I know how demanding your pulpit can be, how much spiritual energy it demands. I also know that, like me, you couldn’t imagine doing anything that’s more meaningful.
Before long, our communities will gather in numbers to observe the High Holy Days. The Days of Awe serve many purposes, one of which is to remind us of the importance of community. We’re reminded of the many ways the communities we lead as rabbis are making a difference in people’s lives. As religious leaders, it is our responsibility, along with our lay leaders, to appeal to every member’s sense of responsibility and obligation. Belonging to a holy community is not about exchanging a fee for a service. It is about giving, working for the greater good, and supporting a wide range of needs.
