Early Edge California Joins Governor and Attorney General in Opposing Trump’s “Public Charge” Rule
California Governor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Xavier Becerra hosted a press conference at the State Capitol last Friday, announcing the state’s efforts to stop the Trump Administration’s Public Charge rule. Policy Analyst Anna Ioakimedes attended on behalf of Early Edge to join state interest groups and advocacy organizations in supporting the Governor and Attorney General.

An Update from the Consortium for English Learner Success Convening
Last Tuesday, August 13, Early Edge co-led the Consortium for English Learner (EL) Success Convening. Our partners included the Alliance for a Better Community, Californians Together, Advancement Project, EdTrust West, and others. Chief Deputy to the State Superintendent of Public Instruction (SSPI), Lupita Cortez Alcalá, was the keynote speaker at the event, which brought together education leaders to discuss the 2020 Policy Agenda and identify opportunities to partner in carrying out the agenda over the next 18-24 months.

When compared to the 7 to 10 percent annual return on investment for every dollar spent on high-quality preschool programs for disadvantaged 3- and 4-year-old children, the analysis of high-quality comprehensive programs starting at birth found a 13 percent annual return on investment.

A new study explores the increased segregation of Latino students in schools. In 1998, the average Latino elementary school student attended a school where 40 percent of their classmates were white, but that number shrunk to 30 percent by 2015.

San Diego County Office of Education’s 17th Annual Early Years Conference
March 6 and March 7, 2020
This two-day professional learning event for Early Learning Educators and Family Child Care providers working with children from birth to five is presented by the San Diego County Office of Education’s (SDCOE) Early Education Programs and Services department. The theme for the 2020 conference is Integrating STEAM into the Early Childhood Education Setting.
If you are interested in presenting at the conference, you can submit a proposal by September 27th.
