Arizona Broadcasters,

We're inviting you to a free seminar about covering the courts and reminding you of two ABA job fairs in September. We're also sharing out information about 4 new ABA projects, putting out our last call to register for September's Future and Awards Lunch, and taking free registrations for 5 seminars coming up between now and November. All of that and more below:

DO YOU HAVE A NEWSROOM THAT COVERS ARIZONA COURTS?
ASU's law school is hosting a FREE media seminar in Phoenix on Thursday, August 29th with the Chief Judge of the District of Arizona and a recently retired U.S. Magistrate judge. This is one of those rare and informal opportunities to interact with, learn from, and build relationships with some key leaders in our court system. The round table discussion will be moderated by ABA radio station KJZZ, but all in attendance are welcome to engage and ask questions. The program start at 7 p.m. and is expected to last an hour. It will be at the Armstrong Great Hall at the Sandra Day O'Conner College of Law in downtown Phoenix. No registration is required ahead of time.

4 PROJECTS COMING SOON TO YOUR ARIZONA BROADCASTERS ASSOCIATION
There are a few pending ABA projects that are close to becoming a reality. While you'll hear about each one in the coming weeks, you may find these top lines helpful right now:

1) Wishes for Teachers
The ABA is launching a new partnership in September with a Fiesta Bowl-funded program called Wishes for Teachers. Wishes for Teachers will be awarding $1 million in grants this fall to hundreds of teachers across Arizona. It’s built as a non-partisan, non-profit effort to support Arizona’s public education system.

The ABA partnership is a two-pronged effort. First, the Wishes for Teachers program will be using the PEP ad program through all of you in September to solicit teachers to apply for these grants. Information about the ads will be heading to your traffic departments next week. Since this is a single-month campaign, I'll be asking for your help to ensure we give the effort a strong run.

Second, the ABA will be rallying all members to get involved with a one-day October event for Wishes For Teachers where all $1 million in grants will actually be awarded to Arizona teachers. This is one of those moments where the collective power of TV and radio can make a real difference in our community. To make the effort memorable for viewers from participating radio and TV stations, every station that participates will be paired with at least one grant-winning teacher from their home market (whether Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, Yuma or beyond) for a live reveal and I'm certain emotional interview during the surprise award.

2) EAS Coding Recommendations
Our Arizona Emergency Alert System (EAS) is one of those things that can easily cause confusion. Between the FCC rules, mix of old and new technology, and complicated workflows, I know I'm not the only one who has needed a little help to wrap my head around how it all works.

We had success this spring by starting the process of connecting our EAS system to internet delivery (instead of relying only on the daisy chain). Now, we're about to finalize a plan that offers ABA-endorsed recommendations for how to handle every EAS code, along with what those codes mean, who uses them, what to expect in a real emergency, as well as a simplified document that explains how our overall EAS program works. Expect more details in the coming weeks.

3) Sales recruitment plan at all three Arizona universities
Thanks to feedback from so many of you, the ABA is close to implementing three different plans, one at each of our state's universities, to  tackle the shortage of media sellers available for hire in the Arizona marketplace. The programs go after everything from re-launching a traditional media sales class, to partnering with student ad clubs, to growing a first-of-its-kind online media sales class and certification program. We expect to get all three of these programs underway during the fall semester, and as each one launches, we'll share full details. All three programs will lead to job fair opportunities and relationship building between stations and new sellers in the market.

4) Lower 2020 Dues
We solicited your feedback in June, and now we're close to finalizing a 2020 dues structure that will notably reduce the overall ABA membership cost for 65% of our members. The rates will stay flat for another 20% of members, and the rates will go up modestly (by a couple hundred dollars at most) for the remaining 20% of the membership. As we told you in June, we want our dues structure to reflect the business realities of today and also offer a rate plan that accounts for different-sized broadcasters across Arizona. We also want to simplify the process. Our current structure has 28 different rates. This proposal nearly cuts that in half and prioritizes equity in membership support. Once the final proposal is blessed by the ABA board of directors later this month, we will be putting this new dues structure to vote. Look for that email in the next couple weeks.

READY, SET, RECRUIT! A MONTH OF JOB FAIRS IN ARIZONA
Your ABA is funding all costs for TWO big job fairs across Arizona in September.

TV and radio groups from around Arizona representing 49 TV and radio stations will host booths in an ABA media cluster at the University of Arizona's Fall Career Days in Tucson on September 16. The estimated attendance is 1,000 soon-to-graduate students.

The process repeats itself in Flagstaff on September 26 when TV and radio groups representing 22 stations will host booths at the NAU Fall 2018 Career and Graduate School Expo, the
sole NAU recruiting event attended by students of all majors.

While both career fairs are currently sold out, you can get added to our wait list for either fair. Just send an email to Mary Kate Lau, mklau@azbroadcasters.org

FINAL CALL TO REGISTER!
STATE-WIDE LUNCH FOR ARIZONA BROADCASTERS JUST WEEKS AWAY
We have only a few seats left for the September 10, state-wide lunch event that brings Arizona broadcasters and their partners together. Among the program highlights:

-Mike Noble from OH Predictive Insights shares a 2020 Arizona political preview.

-NAB Chief Technology Officer Sam Matheny talks tech changes coming in 2020.

-Lin Sue Cooney and Pat McMahon make six big awards to Arizona broadcasters.

-The ABA shares a state of Arizona broadcasting report.

Whether you are based in Phoenix, Tucson, Northern Arizona or Southern Arizona, we hope you'll join us in Scottsdale for a very special September 10 gathering!

ARIZONA AD AGENCY CONTACTS + SOME OF THEIR BIGGEST CLIENTS
A few times each year, we share out a list of ad agencies for Phoenix/Northern Arizona and also for Tucson/Southern Arizona, each one ranked by self-reported revenue. Today, we're sharing out the most updated list we have (51 agencies across Arizona) along with some of the biggest clients each agency maintains.

One of the best ways we can help stations around Arizona is to make sure you are connecting with and building relationships with the biggest agencies across our state. Some of these agencies work heavily with broadcasters today, while others lean more deeply to digital.

ABA GETTING BIGGER YET AGAIN: PLEASE WELCOME NEWEST MEMBER
There's nothing better than growing our member base to help make the radio and TV megaphone for Arizona broadcasters even louder. We've had the pleasure of sharing a few of these updates over the summer, and now we have one more. New to our Arizona Broadcasters Association family this week is KRWV, 99.3 FM, a low-power public radio station out of Gold Canyon. Please welcome owner/operator Scott Kramer and his team!

Our voice of 200+ radio stations, TV stations and associate members is strong ONLY because of each of you. Know someone else who should be in our membership fold? Please help spread the message.

REMINDER: PHOENIX AD FED TO HOST FALL TV MEDIA PREVIEW
Our partners at AAF Phoenix are hosting a fall TV media preview from 14 Phoenix TV/cable groups. The lunch-time event will run from 12p-2p on Thursday, September 12 at the AMC Arizona Center movie theater in downtown Phoenix. Interested in attending? Learn more here

WEEK OF AUGUST 19:
13 HEADLINES IN BROADCASTING TO KEEP YOU IN THE KNOW
1) Before we know it, political season will be here. If you need a refresher on all the rules, here's the  summary version for very busy people!

2) This may be controversial, but could a recession actually be a good thing for radio? That's what RBR says.

3) TV cord cutting is still a thing, but thanks to a changing (and more expensive) digital w
orld, the forecast calls for subscriber loss to slow down.

4) There may be more in common between broadcasters and podcasters than you think. In fact, perhaps both sides can learn something from one another??

5) Which Americans value local news on TV most? A new PEW study has the answers.

6) Make no mistake, the FCC is still watching stations closely. All you have to do is look at last week's fine against one big radio group.

7) If you work in TV, there are two trends right now helping stations to drive more dollars, direct response and digital doubts.

8) Radio's promotion of podcasts could be the X factor for podcastings growth (but it only helps if radio stations are promoting their own podcasts)!

9) Is Facebook about to create a new revenue stream for local new outlets?

10) Want to combat the "TV is dead" studies? Here are some counter points!

11) Here's why even the most iconic radio stations need a touch of "newism" ... and here's why local radio is more important in 2019 than ever.

12) How'd last week's National EAS test go? We learned things we already know in Arizona. The Daisy Chain works, but sound quality is a problem, and rural markets still struggle to pick up the signal.

13) Here's an expensive reminder. Don't use the EAS tones in normal programming! ABC's Jimmy Kimmel Live just got fined $395,000
