Medfield State Hospital Master Plan Committee Update

Poetry Project Launches
Submissions Due Sept. 15, 2019

The Medfield Public Library, Medfield TV and the Cultural Alliance of Medfield are partnering on a Poetry Project as a way for community members of all ages to engage in creating and reading poetry, along with a temporary installation of poems at the former Medfield State Hospital in the fall. Opportunities are open to anyone in Medfield and surrounding communities; the deadline is September 15.

Adults and youth are invited to share their favorite poem and tell a story about their personal connection to the poem. This is based on the Favorite Poem Project started in 1998 by then poet-laureate Robert Pinsky in a one-year open call that generated 18,000 offers from Americans willing to share their favorite poems. “We are hoping to include a few dozen people,” said Cultural Alliance President Jean Mineo. “And we’re excited to partner with Medfield TV to film the readings at their studio or at a local place of the reader’s choice. Poems come to life when they are read aloud.” The readings will be available to view through the Medfield TV website. Contact Brett Poirier at Brett@Medfield.TV to schedule a reading.
For younger children, Medfield Library’s Head of Children’s Services Bernadette Foley will provide a theme for their artistic responses directly on plywood boards to be installed at the Hospital. “Kids will be able to work together on six boards during our Outdoor Storytimes on August 15 and 21 at 11:30 am, as well as our End of Summer Celebration on August 23, 2 - 4 pm,” says Foley.

The Library is also hosting blackout poetry in the teen area lead by Teen Reference Librarian Erica Cote. “Blackout poems are so much fun because you take an existing text – like a page in a book or newspaper, and cross out or black out words until an entirely new poem is created. We provide all of the supplies.” Materials are located downstairs anytime the library is open through September 15.

Finally, the community is invited to create original Haikus. A Haiku is a three line poem with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second line and 5 syllables in the last line. Haikus tend to focus on a moment in time and they generally don’t rhyme. Medfield’s Poetry Project seeks submissions of original Haikus. The Haikus can address any topic, but some suggested themes are a treasured memory, what you love about living in Medfield, or your favorite part of your favorite season. “There’s no limit to how many Haikus you can submit, and several will be included at the Hospital,” says Mineo. Haikus may be submitted at the library at a station near the entrance or through the “Events” section of the library’s Facebook page.

A selection of each type of poetry will be installed at locations throughout the former Medfield State Hospital. Mineo explains, “The Cultural Alliance is a working with the Town and the Metropolitan Area Planning Council (MAPC) to implement cultural programs at the site to highlight different art forms, bring people together to enjoy the property, and build support for future arts and cultural activities on the grounds.” For more information about the creative placemaking initiatives, visit https://www.mapc.org/resource-library/medfield-creative-placemaking/ or to learn more about the Poetry Project visit http://www.medfieldpubliclibrary.org/poetry-project/.

The Cultural Alliance of Medfield (CAM) was formed in 2015 to support artists, expand cultural opportunities and nurture the creative community. CAM is an advocate for cultural re-development of a portion of the former Medfield State Hospital including a performing arts and education center in the Lee Chapel and adjacent building.
