INN members well-represented in climate collaboration

CJR and The Nation, in partnership with The Guardian, recently launched the Covering Climate Now initiative, a call to elevate the amount of environmental reporting. More than 60 outlets—including CBS News, the San Francisco Chronicle, Scientific American, Italy’s la Repubblica and Vox—have made a commitment to run a week of climate-focused coverage between Sept. 16 and 23.

So far, 12 outlets from INN have committed to the project as well:
  • Civic Story
  • ecoRI News
  • Energy News Network
  • Ensia
  • KPBS
  • New Mexico In Depth
  • Next City
  • PassBlue
  • PublicSource
  • Texas Observer
  • Threshold Podcast
  • WJCT
If you're participating and aren't on this list, let us know. Send an email to beverly@inn.org.

FollowtheMoney.org launches new state contribution tool

A new tool tracks how much money is being spent in each state for campaign purposes. California is currently in the lead of state with most contributions.

Just in time for the upcoming election season: the National Institute on Money in Politics, an INN member, just launched its new State at a Glance tool to see where money is being spent in your state elections.

Covering shootings in a responsible way

According to MassShootingTracker.org, there have been 320 shootings in 2019 so far. INN member The Trace, an outlet that covers gun violence, hopes to change the way media outlets cover these events.

In partnership with the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism, The Trace will research and develop a set of guidelines for responsible reporting on mass shooters and their motives. They plan to release those guidelines as a set of industry best practices.

If you or your outlet would like to be involved, please fill out this form to get in touch.

Upcoming webinar: Chat apps and journalism

Ever wondered how newsrooms could use messaging apps in their daily work? The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) will host the webinar "A private affair: chat apps and journalism" at 9 a.m. EST on Thursday, Aug. 22.

The webinar will feature Shalini Joshi, who works on the TruthBuzz project for the India-based PROTO, and Tai Nalon, executive director and co-founder of Aos Fatos in Brazil. Both will discuss the spread of misinformation through private messaging platforms using their experience as journalists from India and Brazil, two countries highly impacted by false messaging.
