By Alec Phillips

The Tarka Trail follows the route of Henry Williamson's novel Tarka the Otter. The book, which is still in print today, follows Tarka's journey around North Devon.

Why you should walk in autumn

feature2.jpg

As summer gradually draws to an end here in the UK, many walkers tend to store their boots away for another year, choosing to wait out the colder months before re-emerging in the spring. However, the autumn season is arguably just as good a time of year in which to explore the Great British countryside. Here at Contours, we want to celebrate the season of colour and highlight all the reasons why you should enjoy a walk in the autumn.

Northumberland Coast Path

Land’s End Round

Wander the coast of Northumberland, where castle ruins preside over long golden beaches and, at low tide, you can cross the tidal causeway to Holy Island. This is a gentle, low-level walk that heads out onto the sand at every opportunity: to ramble across great arcing beaches or through the sibilant grasses of the dunes.

We offer the full Northumberland Coast Path route from Cresswell to Berwick-upon-Tweed, while the South Northumberland Coast Path provides an urban seaside extension to Sunderland.

Walking and Outdoor Festivals in September

Hikers

September is perhaps one of the best times of the year to attend a walking and outdoor festival, when the weather is pleasantly cool and the trails come alive in a display of autumnal colours. Walking groups and other organisations across the country put on a vast array of events, with the aim of encouraging outdoor enthusiasts of all ages and abilities to get together and share their love of the Great British countryside. Why not see if there is an event near you this month?

Did you know?

Autumn officially begins on 23rd September this year.

Autumn

In 2019, the autumnal equinox—also called the September equinox—will arrive on 23rd September in the UK, marking the astronomical start of autumn in the northern hemisphere. The autumn equinox has been a day of celebration for various cultures for centuries, as people tracked the transitions of the Earth’s journeys around the Sun. In particular, it is thought that Stonehenge in Wiltshire was built with the equinoxes and solstices in mind.
