ASEAN Mayors Pledge Joint Commitment to Lead Local Actions for Sustainable Development and Inclusive Growth
at the 5th ASEAN Mayors Forum



26-28 August 2019 | BANGKOK The 5th ASEAN Mayors Forum (AMF) was successfully concluded in Bangkok, Thailand, with more than three hundred fifty participants including 130 mayors/governors/cities representatives taking part in this year’s Forum. The gathering came at a critical time as studies show that ASEAN member states need to accelerate their work in various areas, especially at the local level, if the region is to get back on track in realising the SDGs and other global development agendas. Collaboration for Inclusive Transformation: Towards a Circulating and Ecological Economy
 


30-31 July 2019 | YOKOHAMA – UCLG ASPAC, represented by Secretary General Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi, participated in the International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) 2019 about “Inclusive Transformation: Multi-stakeholder Collaboration Driving the World towards a Circulating Ecological Economy” from 30 to 31 July 2019 in Yokohama, Japan. Approximately 500 participants from international organisations, development agencies, universities, research institutes, private sectors, civil society organisations, and general public attended the Forum organised by Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in collaboration with United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS). Click
Leading a Placemaking Project, Reshaping Seberang Perai Monson Drain
 


13–24 July 2019 | SEBERANG PERAI – UCLG ASPAC scales up its Public Space programme to Seberang Perai, Malaysia, providing support to the Municipal Council to address issues of inclusiveness, connectivity, and community empowerment, through public space revitalisation and community activation. Bringing community engagement element, UCLG ASPAC started to replicate the practice through community workshop held from July 13 to 24, 2019, to revitalise Parit Monsoon drain, a 1.2 km waterfront broadwalk. Aiming at engaging community in a decision-making process, UCLG ASPAC, in collaboration with Municipal Council of Seberang Perai, organised a community workshop to promote a greater sense of belonging, to enhance community bonds, and to bring people to care more about their day-to-day environment. Exposure Visit of 10 Nepali Mayors: Sharing Knowledge on Faecal Sludge Management

4-10 August 2019 | KUALA LUMPUR, JAKARTA – UCLG ASPAC, under the “Municipalities Network Policy Advocacy on Sanitation in South Asia” project, conducted a learning visit on sanitation and faecal sludge management for Nepali local government representatives (comprising 10 Mayors and Deputy Mayors) to Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Jakarta (Indonesia). The project is implemented in Nepal in partnership with the Municipal Association of Nepal (MuAN), the Environment and Public Health Organisation (ENPHO) as a technical partner. The same UCLG ASPAC project is being implemented in Bangladesh by the Municipal Association of Bangladesh (MAB) with SNV as its technical partner. Click
Commitment to Achieve SDGs for Inclusive and Participatory Community Development

 




22 August 2019 | KARACHI – LEAD for SDGs programme in collaboration with Local Council Association of Sindh conducted Sindh Provincial Stakeholders’ Consultation Workshop on Localisation of SDGs in Pakistan’ in Karachi. Stakeholders from various institutions were present to discuss the programme design, intervention logic, current challenges and issues to the local governance system. Several recommendations were made to improve the capacities of local governments in the planning and budgeting of schemes, awareness and advocacy on 2030 Agenda of sustainable development and technical support in creating district plans and policies alignment with SDGs, as well as in the development of district coordination mechanism to involve all the relevant local stakeholders for synergies in the Sindh province interventions planned in the LEAD for SDGs programme. SDGs Implementation in Papua: Enhanced, Strengthened and Reinforced
 

7 August 2019 | PAPUA – Entering the second phase of project implementation, LOCALISE SDGs focuses its capacity building activities on the implementation of SDGs in local level. After second National Training organised in Jakarta (July 2019), this first local training of the new phase was conducted in Papua, eastern province of Indonesia, based on the LOCALISE SDGs baseline survey (conducted in 2018), and is now in the stage of coordination process for team establishment. Various stakeholders attending the workshop: local government officials, academicians, private sectors, and civil societies, such as  Papua Central Statistical Bureau, Local Office of Information and Communication, Local Office of Logistic, Local Office of Transportation, University of Cendrawasih, Papua Chapter of Indonesia Chamber of Commerce, Papua Chapter of State-Owned Public Broadcasting Television Network (TVRI Papua) and other local officials.
