ACTION: OPPOSE RESOLUTION 19-204
Resolution 19-204 would require Bikeshare Hawaii, the 501(c)3 non-profit organization that manages Biki, to prematurely compensate the City for Biki Stops located on City property. The consequences of this resolution are severe and would negatively impact our riders and our service.
CONSEQUENCES OF RESOLUTION 19-204
If passed, Bikeshare Hawaii may be forced to remove Biki Stops located on City property (over 85% of all stations). We would work with private landowners to relocate as many of these stations as possible, but this is a lengthy process that would result in smaller and more distant sites, making the Biki network less connected and less convenient.
Biki Stop #120 (Hotel & Richards) is just one of the stations that would likely be relocated. Last week, this station served as the start or endpoint for nearly 900 rides and has already been expanded in size twice to accommodate the resident riders who rely on this station for their daily commutes.
Oppose Resolution 19-204! Tell City Council how and why Biki is important to you and how this resolution would negatively impact your transportation options.

Not sure what to say? Speaking from personal experience is best. This resident's Letter to the Editor is a great example of a clear and concise message.

Please note: City Council meetings can take several hours and Resolution 19-204 is one of the last items on the Meeting Agenda. The Council also recesses from 12:30 - 1:30pm.
OTHER POINTS TO CONSIDER:
  • Bikeshare Hawaii's mission is to provide the public with high quality, convenient, reliable, and affordable bikeshare services. As a result, Honolulu sees healthier residents, safer streets, reduced traffic congestion, relief from parking demand, and more options for sustainable mobility.
  • To date, 2.4 MILLION Biki rides have been taken, 67% of which are by residents.
  • To date, the City and County of Honolulu has invested $0 into the ongoing operations of the system, as have most major city bikeshare programs through operations contracts. This resolution would not impact TheBus, which receives free space from the City AND is heavily subsidized by taxpayer dollars.
