Welcome to all our Rogers Park families!
It has been a great start of the school year. Thank you for all you have done to prepare your child and get them ready for school after the long summer break.
Construction is almost complete! Swalling and ASD are working on the final touches on our new roof and air handlers. The crews will be working from about noon until late at night to finish things up. The new roof looks great and we will be reaping the benefits of our new air handling system soon.
Rogers Park is part of the ASD60 Wellness pilot program. This means that in our schedule we have 30 minutes dedicated to recess and 30 minutes dedicated to lunch. Recess will be covered by our noon duties and classroom teachers will be covering their students during lunch. Some classrooms are eating in their rooms and others are eating in the cafeteria. Please check with your child’s teacher if you have questions about lunchtime. The staff, parents and administration will be asked to take a few surveys through the year and give feedback to see how the pilot program is working. Also, part of this pilot will be the Daily 54. This means that on days the class does not have PE in addition to lunch recess, they will be taking some sort of brain break activity, whether this occurs in the classroom or outside. If you have any questions about this, please talk to your child’s teacher.
Rogers Park applied and has been accepted into the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP). This means that every Tuesday and Thursday a delivery will arrive consisting in a fresh piece of fruit or veggies for every child. This is a great snack for all! This is a program that will benefit all our children in the school. This will start the week of September 8.
We will be doing a whole school evacuation drill to the First Christian Church at 3031 Latouche Street. This is our rally point. We do these drills each year to make sure the students know where to go in an emergency if we would need to evacuate the school building. With the help of our safety team, we will be creating a scenario to use to guide us through this drill. This scenario has been used at many different elementary schools across the district. This evacuation drill will take place on Thursday, September 5 at 1:45. We should be back in the building by 2:15. This is not a surprise drill and never will be a surprise. All teachers, staff and students will know it is a drill. Please talk to your students about it in advance and also after to debrief the drill.
Remember that staff is on duty in the morning starting at 8:35. Please do not drop your children off at school until that time. There is no supervision on the playground or anywhere outside until 8:35. Breakfast starts in the cafeteria at 8:30 and the students who are having breakfast can come in at 8:30. After school the front door will be locked until 3:45. The students are all released from their classroom doors directly outside. Please arrange a pickup spot for your child that works for you and your family. We have the 1-3 pick-up at one end of the sidewalk out front and the 4-6 pick-up spot at the other end of the sidewalk. Please know ahead of time what your pickup place will be at the end of the day so there is no confusion.
Also, please read the information on cell phone usage in school zones that is new this year.
Hope to see all of you at our Open House from 6:30-7:30pm on Thursday, September 5. We will all meet in the GYM at 6:30 before heading to classrooms. The parents from the Highly Gifted program will meet from 5:30-6:30 to discuss the math program with the HG teachers.
Remember our Jog A Thon is Friday September 20! Start getting those pledges!
Thank you for all you do for your children. The partnership that is created between you and Rogers Park will make every day successful for your child. Please consider joining the PTA and attending some of the meetings so that you have a voice and know what is happening between the school and community.
Thank you,
Nuri Johnsen

Jog-A-Thon Fundraiser...
Last year’s Jog-A-Thon was such a hit that we’re having one again this fall!
This year’s event is coming up fast on Friday, September 20. Just like last year, students will jog or walk laps behind Rogers Park to raise funds for school activities.
Last year’s event raised funds to pay for many types of expenses that are important to teachers, parents and students, but wouldn’t be possible without fundraising. These expenses include classroom supplies for special projects, paying for field trips and related bus costs, and supporting school clubs and after-schools events.
Please check your student’s backpacks for fundraising envelopes and forms. This year, you can also contribute donations online here — https://squareup.com/store/RogersParkPTA. If paying online, please put the student’s name in the notes section of the Web form.
A number of parent volunteers will be needed to help during the event. To sign up as a volunteer, follow this link, or to ask questions about the fundraiser, please contact the Rogers Park Parent Teacher Association at rogers.park.pta@gmail.com, or the Jog-A-Thon coordinator, Rachael Posey, at theposeys@hotmail.com.
Contact Mrs. Howard or Ms. Belts if you have questions.

Choir for grades 1-3 will be meeting on Tuesdays, starting on September 10th, and the choir for grades 4-6 will be meeting on Thursdays, starting on September 12th. Both of these choirs meet from 3:30-5:00 pm.
More details are outlined in the attached permission slip, which must be turned in before attending choir.
Unfortunately our 1-3 grade choir is full but we still have plenty of room in our 4-6 grade choir.

Nurse's Notes...
Hello Rogers Park Families! I have a few important health office updates to share for the start of the school year.
We require updated medication forms, allergy plans, and asthma plans EVERY YEAR. So even though your student has been taking the same medication for years, and I administered it last year, we still need updated paperwork annually. This is also the case for Religious Exemption forms for Immunizations - please send/bring in your updated forms as soon as possible.
I'll begin health screenings for students in grades K, 1, 3, and 5 this week and will be sending notes home with screening results, so keep an eye out for those! The goal is to have them all done by the end of October.
Thank you and please feel free to call or stop by my office if you ever have any questions or concerns! I'm looking forward to another great year at Rogers Park.

Counselor's Corner.....
Hello! I’m Julie Streubel and I am the part time counselor at Rogers Park.
I’m very excited to be returning and working with all the students this year. I do work with all students! Students will get to know me in several ways.
- I will be teaching guidance lessons to all the classes.
- I also offer small groups about friendship, family stress, stress management, school success and grief/loss.
- I help students work through their conflicts using the mediation process as well as help train our student mediators.
Parents and staff can also refer individuals to me who might need a little one on one time. My main goal is to help students be successful in school. If your student requires therapy or more intensive counseling services, please let me know and I can offer some resources to meet those needs.
My school hours are Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 8:30-1:15, Wednesday 11:15 - 4:00.
You can also reach me by email streubel_julie@asdk12.org or call my direct number 742-4811 and leave a message.

Greetings from the Library....
We’re off to a great start in the library! Classes reviewed rules, procedures and we discussed all the cool things we’ll be doing this year.
Please note your child's library day and help your student remember to bring their book(s) back in.
The library is always in need of volunteers who would like to help with shelving books, displays and processing of materials.
If you have some time, please contact Mrs. Levine at: grey-levine_karen@asdk12.org

Notes from the Health Teacher....
Welcome to Health class for the 2019-20 school year!
We’re starting off the year with “get to know you” and team building skills. The upper grades will also be discussing Decision Making Skills. Our next unit, from mid-September through October, will be about Safety. We will be discussing a variety of safety areas including the ASD mandated safe touch/abuse prevention lessons. We will talk about how to keep our body’s safe and what to do in unsafe situations.
If you are interested in previewing the materials for the Safety unit please contact me to set up a time.
Just a reminder to make sure your child knows your home address and phone number in case of an emergency. If you have younger children, making or incorporating your address and phone number into a rhyme or song helps them remember it more easily.
Please contact me, either at school or via my email, if you have any questions.
I look forward to another great year and helping guide your child on their path to good health and wellness.

Box Tops for Education! Get clipping!
Clipping Box Tops is an easy way to help our school earn money. Box Tops are each worth 10 cents and they quickly add up. This school year our goal is to earn $2000. The money goes into the PTA general fund.
Look for pink Box Tops, clip them, and send them to school in a baggie marked with your child's name and teacher's name. There will be contests throughout the year with rewards for students and classrooms that bring in the most Box Tops.
For more information on the Box Tops for Education program, including a list of participating products and our school's progress, visit www.BTFE.com.
