Thanking Lyle Muller, first editor of Iowa Watch, as he retires

Eight years ago, Lyle Muller joined Iowa Center for Investigative Journalism as its first ever director and editor. On Friday, he retired. Since its first story, IowaWatch has produced more than 690 stories for its website and the news outlets of multiple newspapers, websites, radio and TV stations. So far in 2019 alone, 60 IowaWatch stories were published or aired by 141 news outlets 1,040 times. Many of these stories were written by student journalists, as IowaWatch helped mentor the next wave of industry professionals. Longtime Iowan Suzanne Behnke, formerly of Des Moines Business Record and the Des Moines Register, will take the reins. A huge congratulations to Lyle for the work that he led and the impact that he helped create — and thank you for your work.

Calling for (early) submissions: Best of Nonprofit News 2019

Each year, INN asks each member to provide one example of your newsroom producing outstanding public service journalism, telling a story that would have gone untold if not for your efforts. Please help by submitting your best work NOW or as soon as it’s published. Submissions received by this Friday, Sept. 6 may be chosen for special promotion during NewsMatch. We will be updating the collection through the end of the year. We can add or substitute a few submissions as late as Jan. 5, 2020, but we don't have to tell you what it's like when last-minute content pours in on deadline. Here's last year's roundup for inspiration — covering issues ranging from justice reform to climate change.

Facebook's News Page Index training: Why and How to Register Your Page

Register today for Facebook's Sept. 10 webinar, during which a platform expert will walk outlets through registering their news page. The news page index is a foundational step to help Facebook identify pages that primarily publish news content on the platform. Any Facebook Page that primarily creates journalism should be registered as a news page on Facebook. Registered pages may be eligible for products and services specifically designed for news publishers.

Register for News Page Index training.

Celebrating member achievements — Congratulations:

KCUR is taking the lead on “Elections 2020: Listening to America,” an ambitious initiative intended to strengthen public media’s ability to incorporate community and citizen perspectives in local, regional and national coverage related to the election. The project is being funded through a $1.9 million grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Member Impact:

  • How the Chicago Police Department fought — and ultimately lost — its FOIA battle against Chicago Reporter to keep cop names from the public.
  • A Cook County Juvenile Court judge on Thursday took a step toward awarding guardianship of two young children to their foster parents in a case that has raised concerns about how Illinois child welfare officials serve Spanish-speaking, Latino families. ProPublica Illinois started reporting on this in June.
