Musings from a WTWS Board Member – Cecilia Adams

While strolling through the gallery at LHUCA during our 2019 Summer Exhibit, I was struck by one thing, the number of entries by artists that are involved with weekly painting groups.  I am aware of  2 groups and each one had more than half their artists enter the show.  Both groups are composed of diverse artists; professionals, beginners, teachers, intermediates or even social painters.  The point is not the artist's experience or reason, it is the encouragement of the group.

Next time you are around a group of painters, instead of standing next to the shoulder of the artist to see the painting in progress, stand across the table and view the work upside down. You'll see the painting in a more abstract form;  how the composition breaks up the paper, the positive and negative spaces, how the colors play together and how the hard and soft edges flow across the paper.  So when you see the painting right side up, you are more aware of the good points about the painting and you can encourage the artist by telling them of the things that are going well with the painting.  That encouragement reinforces our desire to paint. The more we paint, the more skilled we become. More skill gives us confidence to enter shows.

So if you don't paint with a group, start one.  All it takes is 2 or 3 people.  Even if you don't know a lot, you know more than somebody else.

Sling paint...it's only paper...and happy painting!

Cecilia
