DRUM The Program Hosts Kids Summer Camp, Journey To West Africa, In Collaboration with Alabama Gourds Society

AUGUST 30, 2019, AUSTIN, TX:  DRUM the Program hosted their first annual kids summer camp in Montevallo, AL this past July, where the youth learned about African roots and culture while participating in several classes and activities. Those included: African Drum Classes, African Dance Classes, African Artifacts Exploration, and Art Classes in Mask Making.

Throughout the week, Program Director Elvie Schooley emphasized the intention for the summer camp, so that the youth can understand the impact of these classes:

"How do we cultivate the warrior inside of our children?" To change the trajectory of their lives."

Take a look at the blog, pictures, and videos below, and follow the DRUM the Program Instagram for the recap of Journey to West Africa!

DRUM the Program would like to thank Falcon Arts Supply and the Alabama Gourds Society for supplying the masks and to Emily Gill of the University of Montevallo Theatre Department for assisting us in the costume-making!
