“Why don’t you get a job?
Even Tarquin has a job
Mary Berry’s got a job
So why don’t you get a job?” (Well done)

One of the distinctions we’re encouraged to see in society is between the deserving, and the undeserving poor. It is made to seem that there are simplistic answers to social problems, that opportunities are equally available to all. Talbot and co offer a class based critique of this idea.

But it doesn't require us to have a university education to see through the media smokescreen. It doesn't take much personal reflection to recognise that the truth about society is far more complex, than 'scroungers vs workers' and that where there appear to be the symptoms of such narratives, the underlying problems often began generations ago. What would happen if we replaced judgement with compassion? How can we flip the script, and encourage a more positive and supportive culture to develop?

IDLES are a Bristol based alternative rock/post hardcore band whose lyrics frequently critique aspects of contemporary society. For my money, they are one of the most important groups in circulation in 2019.
