August Highlight: Amazing Giant Sea Bass Encounter

On our August 4 trip to Catalina Island, our assistant manager, Andy Rios, came face to face with this 400+ pound black sea bass and captured some amazing shots. This gentle giant came within one foot and remained close… So close that you can see the copepods and the battle scars on the face. Such an amazing encounter.

Come out to dive with us. June to September is their mating season, which means we are in the peak season for giant sea bass sightings. A few years ago, we saw a school of more than 30 individuals on one of our dives at the back side of Anacapa Island.

Another Local Dive Trip Highlight

Can you guess where this picture was taken? If you noticed the colony of purple hydrocoral and said Farnsworth Bank, try again. This is from our two-day dive adventure at San Clemente Island aboard the Horizon. The dive site is known as 9 Fathoms, located at the north end of San Clemente Island. The density and size of the hydrocoral and the abundance of marine life there rivaled, or even surpassed, those of the famed Farnsworth Bank. We will be going back there again next summer (July 18-19, 2020). Who wants to join us?

We will post details for these trips on our website soon!
Northern California Camp/Dive/Eco Adventure
October 2 - 6, 2019

There is a hidden gem on the Northern California coast that is very special to the members of Ocean Safari Dive Team (OSDT). Our “secret” campsite is right on the edge of a river amongst some giant redwoods on private property owned by our good friend.

In 2018 we adopted a section of the underwater habitat to help restore a healthy kelp garden. We welcome like-minded people on our trip, those who share our eco-consciousness, eager to learn about the area’s history and natural wonders, and want to help us take care of the river and surrounding environment.

During our adventure, we will have activities for divers and non-divers of all ages. This is a learning and service-oriented trip, and we are inviting you to join us for this very special experience.

Underwater Photography Seminar and Workshop
Optimize your Camera and Accessories to Improve your Underwater Photos
Our photo seminar series is taught by our resident pro photographer, Mike Brock, and it consists of a classroom seminar, pool workshop, and openwater field seminar. In the classroom, we will cover ways to optimize your camera settings and accessories. Mike will discuss tips and tricks that even experienced photographers might have never known! Then, you’ll practice the settings in the pool so you understand how to get the shots you’ve always wanted to capture. Finally, our professional teacher will lead a private group of divers openwater to try out their newfound knowledge and skills underwater. You can sign up for individual sessions or all three.
