Hurricane Dorian Update #8
September 1, 2019

Hurricane + Storm Surge WARNING
Issued for Brevard County

National Hurricane Center issues HURRICANE WARNING for our area.

A Hurricane Warning means sustained winds of 74 mph (64 kts) or higher associated with a hurricane are expected within 36 hours. A Hurricane Warning can remain in effect when dangerously high water or a combination of dangerously high water and exceptionally high waves continue, even though winds may be less than hurricane force.

A Storm Surge Warning means there is a danger of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, during the next 36 hours in the indicated locations. This is a life-threatening situation. Persons located within low laying/at risk areas should take all necessary actions to protect life and property from rising water and the potential for other dangerous conditions.

Residents who do not plan to stay in public shelters are encouraged to stay with family or friends on the mainland, and to evacuate tens of miles rather than hundreds of miles, as traffic on highways and interstates is likely to be heavier. A mandatory evacuation order is in place effective at 8 a.m. Monday for residents on the barrier island, low-lying and flood-prone areas, and those living in manufactured or mobile homes.

Mandatory evacuations begin at 8 a.m. to allow residents to take shelter by nightfall.

Hurricane Dorian Update

@NWSMelbourne
Sep 1, 5PM Update: Hurricane Watches/Warnings issued for all coastal areas. This is a serious situation and preparations should be on their way to completion. Hurricane force wind gusts possible along barrier islands with intensity of winds decreasing as you go inland.

It is important to remember not to focus on the exact forecast points within the track as effects from a tropical system can be felt for tens or even hundreds of miles away from its center. Some helpful quick tips to be prepared this hurricane season include:

  • Make sure to have enough supplies to last you and your family at least a week (don’t forget pets)
  • Have a full tank of gas for your car and generator or charge up your electric vehicle before a storm approaches (www.plugshare.com/location/141764)
  • Have a first aid and basic tool kit
  • Be up to date on all needed medications
  • Consider having a NOAA weather radio and follow the City on social media for updates
  • Clear storm drains and debris from your gutters
  • NEVER drive through flooded roadways or around barriers
  • Have an evacuation plan
When the storm is within 36 hours of predicted landfall the City will only use Twitter to relay information. You do not need a Twitter account to view the City’s tweets.  A Twitter timeline has been embedded into the City’s website to ensure there are multiple ways to access the up-to-date information.

Mandatory Evacuation Starts
Monday at 8 a.m.

8/31/19 | 2:30PM | Press Release: Dorian Slows; Brevard County Delays Mandatory Evacuations 24 Hours

Brevard County emergency officials have announced a 24-hour delay in mandatory evacuations, and are now calling for evacuations to begin at 8 a.m. Monday due to a slowing but still dangerous Hurricane Dorian.

The following residents should START evacuating on Monday, Sept. 2, at 8 a.m.:

  • those in mobile homes or manufactured housing,
  • those in low-lying, flood-prone areas,
  • those with special medical needs such as electrical dependence,
  • those who live on the barrier islands, including areas from Kennedy Space Center south to the south beaches, and Merritt Island.

The mandatory evacuation was initially to begin at 8 a.m. Sunday. However, the path of the slow-moving Dorian has allowed more time for residents to prepare for a major water and wind event still threatening Brevard County beginning on Tuesday.

"This is not your government saying we're out of harm's way," said Public Safety Director Matt Wallace. "This is still a killer storm. We want our residents to remain vigilant, to protect your family and loved ones and to make smart decisions.

"A decision is also pending on the opening of County shelters. Depending on Dorian's progress, County officials stressed evacuations and potential shelter openings could be subject to change.
