KING WILLIAM ASSOCIATION APPROVES ART LEAGUE GRANT REQUEST FOR SAALM ENTRANCE ENHANCEMENT
Above: Concept for new signage near the new sidewalk and entry gate

In the not-so-distant future, the Art League may have a more welcoming, updated entry, thanks to a $3000 grant from the King William Association. KWA Grants Committee Chair Rosemarie Kanusky confirmed the award in a telephone conversation with SAALM president Lyn Belisle Kurtin last week.

In addition to the new signage, other initiatives supported by this KWA grant include:
  • Repair and relocation for Charles Williams' sculpture "Ancient Warrior"
  • New signage for individual sculptures from Allegra Printing
  • Plants to landscape new entry gate (volunteer labor)
  • Lighting for new brick entry sidewalk (already constructed)
We have been invited to formally accept our funding at the KWA Membership Meeting on Wednesday, September 4, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. This is the second consecutive year that the KWA has supported the Art League - many thanks to the Grants Committee and staff, and a special welcome to new KWA Executive Director Lisa Lynde.

Much-anticipated 2019 Artist of the Year exhibit open Sunday

Catalog cover for Jane Dunnewold's exhibition

For the first time in its 107-year history, the Artist of the Year Committee, chaired by Steven G. Smith, has chosen a fiber artist as its Artist of the Year for 2019.

Jane Dunnewold was selected through a year-long two-part process, beginning with a list of 10 renowned regional artists, and ending with three finalists whose portfolios were evaluated by three out-of-state art academicians, gallerists, and curators. Their choice was Jane Dunnewold for the consistent excellence, significance, and maturity of her body of work.

Dunnewold teaches and lectures internationally, and has mounted numerous solo exhibitions, including Inspired by the Masters (Texas Quilt Museum (2018) – also slated for exhibition at the National Quilt Museum in 2020. A second mixed media series featuring re-purposed quilt blocks and gold leaf was exhibited at the McNay Art Museum in San Antonio, Texas (2017) and more recently at the Armory Art Center in West Palm Beach, Fl.

She has authored numerous books, including the classic Complex Cloth (1996) and Art Cloth: A Guide to Surface Design on Fabric (2010.) In 2016 North Light Books published Creative Strength Training: Prompts, Exercises and Stories to Inspire Artistic Genius. She is a former President of the Surface Design Association and currently runs a ten month Creative Strength Training course online.
The public is invited to the opening reception on Sunday, September 8th from 3-5 p.m. at the Art League, 130 King William.

NEED MORE FIBER? Try our Pop-Up!

Linda Rael, "Nature Spirit"

The San Antonio Art League & Museum is collaborating with the Fiber Artists of San Antonio to host a two-day Pop-Up Fiber Art Shop at SAALM's galleries on September 21st and 22nd from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.

This special event, held in conjunction with Jane Dunnewold's show, is designed to showcase the fiber arts as contemporary expression.  Fiber artists have moved from the traditional to gallery walls with their innovative techniques and social statements.

The Pop-Up Shop will feature work for every budget in many media by a dozen FASA member artists including Linda Rael (work pictured above), silk dyer Robin Early, and textile collagist Anita Centeno. Admission is free to the public, and visitors will also get to enjoy Jane Dunnewold's exhibit on both Saturday and Sunday.

Where: 130 King William Street, San Antonio, Texas 78204

If you have questions about  the Pop-Up Shop event, please email us at saalm@saalm.org.
EXCLUSIVE CALL FOR ENTRY FOR
ART LEAGUE MEMBERS

SAALM is installing an exciting multi-dimensional exhibition in January of 2020 called Texas Clay: 20/20 Vision in partnership with the San Antonio Potters' Guild.

Painters and potters will express the concept of clay as a personal expression within the limits of a 20" space. SAPG potters and ceramicists will display juried work that is no larger than an imaginary 20 x 20 x 20" box, while San Antonio Art League members will create work on a 20 x 20" canvas (or other substrate) that can be wall-hung.

SAALM members will submit their work for Texas Clay: 20/20 Vision through "EntryThingy", an online art service that will be used later in the spring for the 90th Annual Juried Exhibition. This will give members a chance to "test drive" the EntryThingy art submission site to see how it works.

There is a nominal $10 entry fee for up to two pieces. The Call for Entry is open now - details can be found here on the SAALM website. There will be awards for both two- and three-dimensional work.

How will YOU express the concept of clay without actually digging your hands into it? Show us your concept on a 20x20" canvas. This will be an exciting, crowd-pleasing way to kick off 2020 at the San Antonio Art League.

This is a photo of progress!

Our construction project is in full swing. The former carport area at 130 King William is being transformed into a state-of-the-art storage facility for our Permanent Collection. Stay tuned during the next two months for the rest of the story!
Without your membership and support, none of this would be possible. Thank you!

If you have questions, or just want to join in the conversation, email us at saalm@saalm.org.

See you in September!
