Dear JAI Members and Friends of JAI –

Hope to see many of you at the USC Hillel Opening: For Heaven's Sake! this coming Sunday. It is as close as most of us will get to the Jerusalem Biennale without a round trip ticket to Israel. Sagi Refael, our very gifted curator, did a wonderful job designing the installation. There will be a welcome and remarks at about 4:00 o’clock on Sunday the 8th. Really hope to see you there!

The exhibition presents and elaborates on the various topics that will be further discussed in the Jerusalem exhibition, via artworks in different media. Both exhibitions revolve around issues of complex identity, Jewish heritage, family memories, social concerns and responsibility toward one's community, art and activism, conflict at borders, women's rights and feminism, ecological concerns and global warming, abuse of power and the importance of morality, and more...

Dear friends and fans of Israeli Art,

I am excited to announce that enrollment has begun for my new seminar Introduction to Israeli Art: Past, Present, Future.  I will be teaching this course at the American Jewish University (AJU) in Bel Air, October 28 – December 16, 2019, on Mondays from 12-2 PM.

In a series of eight lectures, we will explore the history of Israeli art, since its origins of emergence in the late 19th century to the present day.  Together, we will discuss how Israeli artists have approached themes of Landscape, Heroism, the Holocaust, Ethnicity, Gender Identity, and Otherness, from both traditional and progressive viewpoints.  By examining thought-provoking visuals, my seminar will engage a wider audience to reflect on Israeli art in the context of its history, society, and culture.

Please tell your family and friends, we’re going to have lots of fun!

If you would like a list of the lectures or have any questions, feel free to email me back! :-)

Best wishes, Sagi
