Your Vital Updates from
Tasman Bay Chiropractic
Welcome to the Spring 2019 edition of our quarterly newsletter.

We are thoroughly enjoying having the full team back together now that Corrian and Hamish have both returned from their leave. The synergy of the whole team is really fun to be part of and we all thrive in the momentum that it brings.

Our July-August theme of 'Healthy Habits' was a good one to help us through the winter months of shorter days and colder temperatures. It is great to see the noticeably longer days giving us time for that walk along the beach or up in the hills after work.
I have noticed a large number of referrals just recently, so we acknowledge all of you who have referred a friend, colleague or family member. See below for information on the substantial discount on pillows available to our referrers. (Corrian and I have each had one of these pillows for more than five years and neither of us would be without them!)

If you do have someone in your life who needs that extra nudge to get themselves in here, you may wish to take one of our new brochures away with you and pass it on.  The content of our brochure has changed significantly and we now have a short summary of just what chiropractic is as well as an explanation of what to expect when you come for care here at TBC. You may also wish to remind people that there is quite a lot of information on our website, and we also have an active Facebook page.

Welcome to our new folk. It is great to have you join the practice. I work 'front office' on a Monday morning only which means that I may not have met you yet!

This quarter's articles by the team all have a similar theme - each is a variation on doing something a bit differently. I love that we don't assign a theme but that we so often see a synergy on what team members submit. Yes there is a 'time of the year' element to the content, but one of our values of being life-long learners shines through too.
Our September-October theme is 'Birthday Time'. We have a double celebration on 18 September as this date is recognised as the official birthday of chiropractic and is also the 17th anniversary of the opening of Tasman Bay Chiropractic! We have a few plans underway to mark this, so keep an eye out next time you are in the practice.

Another anniversary that we like to recognise each year is World Spine Day.
Taking place on October 16 each year, World Spine Day has become a focus in raising awareness of back pain and other spinal issues. World Spine Day highlights the importance of spinal health and wellbeing. Promotion of physical activity, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions will all feature as people are encouraged to look after their spines and stay active.

Up-to-date news is featured on our website and/or Facebook page as well as on the noticeboard in the practice. Take a look regularly to see the fun, competitions, winners and information.

With very best wishes

Lynley

Hello Spring!

It is wonderful being back at work. I am thoroughly enjoying seeing the happy faces and helping people reach their health goals.

As expected, my return to work has been a ‘learn as you go’ process. I am learning how much energy I have available for life overall and, in particular, for work life. Since Hamish’s return from leave I have reduced my practice hours to 15 per week. With the support of the team and especially Hamish, this is serving most of you very well. I am working with an Occupational Therapist to get my work/life balance to where it should be for me. For the most part I am getting the work balance right ….

So please do keep making referrals and keep your regular visits up to date as I am available and Hamish is continuing to grow his practice. To ensure we maintain appointment availability, we are recruiting a new graduate chiropractor to commence work early next year.

The present-time consciousness for me around conducting consultations is that I find this work very energy consuming. I have decided to treat this as an opportunity to develop more balance between consultation work in the business and time and energy working on the business. I have made a commitment to becoming more involved in Chamber of Commerce business activities which will involve networking and updating my knowledge around contemporary business models and the challenges workplaces are facing. So my workload will be increasing in the area of working on the business. As well as attending Chamber events, the recruiting of competent chiropractors will see me building my mentoring activities and responsibilities.

As Lynley noted earlier, TBC has been open 17 years as at 18 September. This milestone provides a great opportunity to reflect on some of the activities of the business over the years and the wonderful people who have been part of the practice. I do remember being very nervous about opening a practice in ‘little old Richmond’ at age 31 with a large mortgage and no patient base. My nervousness quickly turned into gratitude as the practice grew in leaps and bounds by the week.

The one thing that has stayed the same through this time is the significance of our staff’s connection with our clients. The better the connection, the better the clients’ outcomes. I am really proud of the team and thrilled that we have prioritised this culture in our practice.

A couple of notable areas of change are the move from paper based notes to computer based notes and another is around x-rays. Our old x-ray service saw the staff develop the film (chemicals and all)  in the darkroom ie the little room alongside the toilet. We now take digital images which are available for viewing almost immediately.

We opened with stand up desks/work stations in the consulting rooms and at the front desk. I have a wee smile when I see stand up desks being advertised as the ‘latest’!

So the saying ‘the only constant in life is change’ is certainly pertinent for me right now. I am grateful that there are new doors opening, opportunities to be embraced and good people around me to ‘enjoy the ride’ with.

Wishing you all healthy and happy changes in your lives

Warm regards
Corrian

Many of you have asked for our chiropractors' thoughts on choosing a pillow. It does depend whether you sleep on your back or your side, and yes a good pillow is worth the investment.

To celebrate their arrival, we have decided to launch them with a couple of promotions.

Welcome to the Era of Self Care

It has been hash-tagged more than 16 million times on Instagram and was crowned Apple’s 2018 App Trend of the Year.
So, what is self care?
If you are anything like me, it is a vision of someone in a big bath tub with bubbles overflowing, candles and a book or a massage treat built around your busy schedule.

Self care has become essential for us to keep our bodies and minds in a healthy state and especially for this generation, lack of self care can lead to various health issues such as anxiety, depression, obesity and much more.

I have put together some simple ideas that you can use in your daily routine that are inexpensive and that most of you could already be doing or have likely already thought about! Here's a reminder.

Breathing
Yes, we are all breathing but are we doing it properly? Try to be mindful of your breathing, slow it down, notice how you breathe.  I know I hold my breath when I am anxious or feeling stressed! If you are breathing properly this will calm your nervous system and emotions.

Exercise
Walk to work if you can, get outside and absorb your surroundings. Fresh air, sunshine, bird song, running water, and gorgeous views are all essential for better health.

Nourishment
We all know that a healthy diet is key as well as drinking lots of water. Fuel that beautiful body of yours. Include some fresh herbs from your garden or you could even try growing your own micro greens! Not only nourish your body but your mind as well. Try writing a journal or some mindful colouring. Slow down and enjoy.

Connection
Join a group of like minded, positive people. Have a good belly laugh, sing, dance and talk. Connection for me has really helped separate me from the household and made me think about what I need to be the best version of myself!

Sleep
Turn off those devices. Read a good book, snuggle up, make your bed a comfy paradise! Who doesn’t love a freshly made bed.

If you haven’t already started embarking on your own self care journey,
make some changes, however small.

Be kind to yourself and others.

Start living your best life. Go on, I dare you!

One last thing, SMILE, those things suit everyone.

See you soon.

With love
Elise

Frequently Asked Question of the Season
Do I have to go to my GP to get a referral for chiropractic care for my injury?

No you do not need a GP referral for chiropractic care under ACC.  Your chiropractor will assess your injury and complete their section of the ACC form and our CA's will process the form including submitting it to ACC.

If you hurt yourself doing nothing, you desperately need to do more.

I must confess that I have taken the title of this article from a friend who practices in Canada. But the message behind this rings true for New Zealanders just as much as it does for Canadians.

Sometimes we find ourselves in situations where we are sore or feel like we have injured something but cannot think what could have possibly caused such a thing to happen. The old saying “The straw that broke the camel's back” is often one that we use to discuss these occurrences, so how do we reduce the straws before even getting to that breaking point? Of course, we all know what these recommendations are but from time to time we need reminding...

1.       Exercise and Stretching

You will notice that I included the word “AND” above, because both are important. Swathes of research is done into the effects of exercise on the body and how stretching reduces recovery time. But as life gets busier the time we need to exercise seems to disappear first. Although we still might get out on the bike or the treadmill from time to time, it seems that the stretching afterwards takes a backseat and does not get done. If you are finding yourself sore and are not doing enough of either stretching or exercising, taking up just 10 minutes a day to add either of these activities may make the biggest difference.

2.       Eat

Food and diet are often discussed as part of life as well as managing weight and various other health concerns. My general rule of thumb is the best food for you is at the start of the supermarket. Fruits, vegetables and proteins should fill the trolley, then the other things are the 'cherry on top'. If you cannot pronounce any of the ingredients, then it shouldn’t be part of your diet at all. A good mix of healthy carbohydrates (fruits and vegetables are carbs!), fats and proteins are essential building blocks for your body. All are needed for energy, muscle repair and good brain function. Carbs provide your cells with energy, proteins are the building blocks of muscles and fats restore most of your organs and when stored, can be used as a powerful energy source. Proteins can be consumed from meats, dairy products, legumes and various other foods. Healthy fats are found in nuts and seeds, also dairy, meat and oils.

3.       Get Adjusted

Research suggests that the more frequently a person is adjusted, the better their overall improvements. Here at Tasman Bay Chiropractic we understand that life is busy and not everyone can afford to take the time to get here for an adjustment every day or afford the cost. But if you do find yourself in the situation of being sore without real cause, it might be time to ramp up the frequency of your visits to get your body back on track.

4.       Sleep

Everyone has heard that we need eight hours sleep a night - some can function on more, some can function on less, but eight hours is a good average. The earlier in the evening you fall asleep, the better quality your sleep is and therefore the more rested you should feel in the morning. Our body clock functions on many triggers - light and temperature being the main two that affect us day to day. So if you can get to sleep earlier in the night you will be more likely to get into REM sleep (the deep sleep) which is important for converting short term memory to long term memory and for cellular repair and recovery. If you find that you lose an hour or two sleep here and there, it is important that you catch up on this sleep when you can, as the body still needs those hours to help repair itself from the damage we do to it day to day.

5.       Liquids

We know our bodies are mostly made of water; therefore it is important to keep the fluid level in our systems high. There are several rules surrounding liquids that are important. The first is that water pretty much the only liquid that re-hydrates your body. Coffee, alcohol, most types of tea, fizzy drinks, juice, milk and sports drinks all require water to be processed in our body, therefore they usually dehydrate you even more! The second rule is that we should drink water up till the point where we have one clear wee per day. Colour in urine is a good indicator of toxins being flushed out of the body, the darker the urine, the more toxins. If you drink enough water to get to the point where you are peeing clear, your body has flushed out as many of these toxins as it can up to that point so you’ll know you are giving your body its best chance to focus on other things.

6.       Mindfulness

By this I mean focusing on all these above things and being at peace with yourself and your surrounds. Accept the fact that there are some things you cannot change or control and let them go. Holding on to stress or worry is damaging for your body and it needs to let go. Find something fun to do that takes your mind away from the stress of life and let your brain rest. You may choose to meditate, dance, do yoga, hit a boxing bag, go for a run/bike/swim/gym session, sunbathe, sing, watch movies, play music, meet up with friends, pet animals, hold babies, play with children, watch the sunset, howl at the moon, skinny dip, tell someone you love them, perform a random act of kindness, eat chocolate, do a puzzle, read a book, cry or laugh. Most importantly, take care of the people around you and they will take care of you.

Take care
Hamish

Spring cleaning!

When you think of spring cleaning, typically you think of the various jobs around the house that you do as an extra, maybe as they are not as high priority as your regular cleaning schedule, that end up making you feel that you have accomplished something worthwhile when you complete them.

Have you ever applied that same thinking to yourself? Have you ever given your lifestyle a spring clean? I think we are all capable of, at one point or another in our lives, telling ourselves we need to do something differently - maybe we need to overhaul our diet, maybe we want to maintain a healthier weight, maybe we want to increase our exercise level. Or maybe it's something a bit simpler - maybe we want to laugh more in our day, maybe we want to spend a little more time with our kids, or maybe we just want to have a bit more time to spend on ourselves. From the outside, any one of these things seems simple, but maybe to you it is a big step. But taking that step is half the battle.

I'm just as guilty as the next person of wanting to change things, making small steps to start, but then not having the follow through. It is a pattern. I'm working to break this. So this spring I am trying something new, something I have never done before. I'm attending a yoga class a friend invited me to. Normally I would probably make up some excuse as to why that wouldn't work. But I have decided that I don't like that pattern anymore, so I'm working on changing that.

I hope that you will try and give your lifestyle a bit of a spring clean, even if it is in baby steps.

The Universe WILL Provide

I’m all for reducing stress and I know the things that I am supposed to do. They include:

  • Get plenty of sleep

  • Eat well and drink lots of water

  • Take mindful moments

  • Have regular chiropractic care and follow the recommended schedule of care

It’s a work in progress…….

I have recently moved home - 13 years, one dog and two children later. It's the first time we have been through the buying and selling process independently. I am a firm believer in things working out if they are meant to be, however in saying that it didn't stop it from being stressful. Three months would supposedly give me heaps of time to make lists, sort things and de-clutter - but that time ran away like water.

I had good intentions of following those stress-less protocols and not sweating the small stuff. I failed in some of those endeavours -  but the move happened anyway and here I am on the other side enjoying (mindful moments in) our new home. I am better prepared now for future moves, I may not have done all things the right way but I’ve banked the experience and can draw on those learnings for the future.

It was meant to be and the universe did provide.

I am learning to trust that time moves on regardless of how much we stress.

Enjoy your life today, because yesterday has gone and tomorrow may never come.”
