Is summer over already?!

Greetings, everyone!
I hope you had a blessed summer despite the grueling heat and busy schedules. Because of your prayer and support, we had an amazing summer with lots of great news of how wonderfully God worked through MCTC.

Mi Casa Tu Casa 2018-2019 Summary Video

2-Year Anniversary Party

On July 27th, we hosted our 2-Year Anniversary Party. MKs and supporters gathered together to celebrate and remember God's faithfulness in our community in the past year. We knew the day would be crowded and hot, but all were used to the mission-field-style gathering.

Thank you to all who have supported us through prayers and donations this past 2018-2019 year. You were instrumental to every open door and heart that we witnessed among MKs. We cannot thank you enough for your faithfulness and love for MKs.

MK Vision Camp

It was by sheer providence that we got connected to Grace Korean Church in Fullerton, CA. Their Grace Ministries International mission organization had already planned a 2-week US tour for 22 teenage MKs from all around the world, all expenses paid. All itinerary was planned and fundraising completed to spoil these MKs silly for the duration of the trip.

But just two months before the tour was to take place, one of the elders felt compelled that these MKs would need more than what was planned. I believe the Holy Spirit spoke to his heart that MKs would best be understood and served by other MKs. And by word of mouth, Elder Peter learned about us and contacted us to talk about what we could do for MKs. We quickly recruited adult MKs from our community and the camp was ready. We had attended and put together so many MK retreats that planning was truly the easiest and smoothest part of the process.

On the first day of the camp, we were floored by the stories that surfaced. Of the 22 MK attendees, 7 had been adopted and the majority lived away from their parents with their relatives or just with their siblings. It's as though raising oneself was a given for this cohort. All of the staff felt overwhelmed by the painful abandonment that they had lived as a common reality.

But God moved. With each vulnerable story that was shared, the small groups embraced each other's pain and grew closer and more intimate. Even the MKs that we felt were the toughest nut to crack, opened their hearts and befriended other MKs. We truly witnessed the power of community.

Many times, we felt powerless and frustrated. Saying goodbye was especially hard for the staff. However, we decided to believe in the power of love and community. Though none of the MKs are physically together anymore, we know seeds were planted and God will not stop pursuing each and every one of them.

GMI Missionary Training

Soon after the MK Vision Camp ended, we received another call from Elder Peter who presented us with the opportunity to speak to 13 missionaries from GMI about MKs. GMI currently has 337 missionaries in 57 countries, but we were shocked to hear that they had never had any workshops, seminars, or training on the topic of parenting MKs.

We had two sessions on the topic of "Getting to Know MKs" and "Academic Options Available for MKs" and Jun led worship and prayer time. It was a priceless learning experience for us as we have been praying for the opportunity to have a direct conversation with missionary parents.

We knew this new training would bridge the gap between the parents and their children, but we were a bit nervous about how the parents would receive our perspective on MKs. But even before we spoke, we were so humbled by these missionaries' openness and eagerness to learn about MKs. They were desperate to understand their children and to care for them. At the end of the training, we got to hear testimonies from the parents' perspectives, a first for both Jun and me. One of the parents shared with us that after the first day of training, he called his son who had struggled to assimilate in the mission field and apologized for their lack of understanding and empathy. Another hadn't even considered taking her 8th-grade son to the mission field but was now searching for other options so they wouldn't be separated. We realized that God urgently wants to break down walls within families, and we pray that God would continue to use us in this ministry of reconciliation.

Monthly Fellowships & other regular programs

We continued to host monthly gatherings for MKs in our community as well as those visiting California for the summer. Our regular programs, such as Ball Boys, Girls' Book Club, Mommy Fellowship, and other spontaneous fellowships in smaller groups, have been continuing through summer. Currently, we are housing three male MK's upstairs and one female MK downstairs. One is transitioning to college life, another is job-searching, and the other two are working fulltime.

It is such a blessing to be able to meet with our dear friends and to share lives together, pray for one another and enjoy God's beautiful creation in the outdoors. In October, we look forward to welcoming Biola MKs with some warm homecooked meals and are excited to start Azusa MK fellowships this year. We never get tired of meeting one another! :P

Prayer Requests

  1. Jun, Sunmin and Yubi will be visiting Korea from September 4th to 14th to spend some time with Jun's parents. We'll also be making lots of effort to network and reconnect with some of the active MK ministries in Korea. Please pray for safe travels and fruitful and edifying fellowships.
  2. With Yubi getting bigger, we are finding it increasingly more difficult to manage all of MCTC programs. Please pray that God would stir MKs' hearts to want to serve the community.
  3. We are also seeking to raise about $500 per month. We have experienced God providing for us through unexpected ways when we first seek His kingdom. Please pray that our hearts and minds will be set on seeking His kingdom.
