The Mayor's State of the City Address has been scheduled for Wednesday, February 8th from 12:00-1:30 pm at the Salem Conference Center.  In keeping with tradition Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, Salem City Club and Downtown Rotary are the hosting this annual event.

CCTV Broadcast Schedule

Our third program on the economy and the Great Recession is ever so timely.

Dr. Ed Whitelaw and Dr. Bryce Ward will address understanding strengths and weaknesses of a local economy, and policy options to create economic growth.
 
Ed Whitelaw is the founder and Chairman of the Board of ECONortwest which has, over more than 30 years, earned a reputation as the premier economic consulting firm in the Northwest.  He has taught at the University of Oregon since 1967 where he is a professor of economics. He specializes in urban and regional economics, resource and environmental economics, and the economic consequences of policy decisions. He has testified before administrative, legislative, congressional, and judicial bodies on a variety of economic issues.  Dr. Whitelaw holds a Ph.D. in Economics from M.I.T.
 
 
Bryce Ward joined ECONorthwest in 2005. His areas of expertise include econometric analysis and applied microeconomics -- including urban and regional economics, labor economics, public finance, and environmental and natural resource economics. Dr. Ward has applied his expertise to a variety of projects involving litigation support and program evaluation.
Dr. Ward received his Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University and his B.A. in economics and history from the University of Oregon.  He has taught at Harvard College, Lewis and Clark College, Portland State University, and the University of Oregon.

“Authors You Should Know and

 Books You Should Read”
 
 Salem City Club is pleased to announce its Fifth Friday series.  This series of three, fifth Fridays will be focused on local authors. 

  


THE FIRST FIFTH FRIDAY was a great success!   Approximately forty people enjoyed an excellent presentation by Russ Beaton on his latest  book with co-author Chris Maser, Economics and Ecology-United for a Sustainable World.  Thank you, Russ.  And special thanks to members Jan Margosian and Carla Mikkelson for organizing this successful Fifth Friday.

At the next Fifth Friday, March 30, 2012, we will hear Gwen Carr discuss her newly released book, Perseverance:  A History of African Americans in Oregon’s Marion and Polk Counties

The final Fifth Friday, Friday, June 29, 2012, will feature Oregon’s first and only woman governor, Barbara Roberts, discussing her newest book, Up the Capitol Steps.

 Friday, November 18:  SALEM MAYOR ANNA PETERSON AND KEIZER MAYOR LORE CHRISTOPHER.  Mayor Anna M. Peterson took office on January 11, 2011, and is serving her first term.  She has been a leader in business, civic and community organizations in Salem for over 25 years.  She attended Roosevelt High School, in Portland, Oregon and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Journalism from the University of Oregon.
Mayor Lore Christopher took office on January 2, 2001 as the first woman Mayor of Keizer and was elected to a fifth term in 2008.   Mayor Christopher holds a Master’s of Public Administration degree from Portland State University.  She currently serves as Human Resources Director for the Oregon State Legislature. Special thanks to Salem Hospital for being a Silver Sponsor of this meeting.
