Back in January 2019, we launched a series of interviews about scientific publishing and open access. The debate was sparked by the publication in September 2018 of ‘Plan S’ – the European Commission initiative to ensure that from 1 January 2020, all scientific publications reporting on the results of publicly funded research are immediately available in Open Access. We've collated some of the key talking points on scientific publishing here.
The 2019 Stein Rokkan Prize for Comparative Social Science Research has been awarded to Andreas Wimmer, Columbia University, in recognition of his book Nation Building: Why Some Countries Come Together While Others Fall Apart, published by Princeton University Press in 2018. The prize is presented by the International Science Council (ISC), the University of Bergen, Norway, and the European Consortium for Political Research (ECPR).
The Global Ocean Observing System Programme (GOOS) is looking for six new and enthusiastic members to join its Steering Committee. GOOS have just launched the Global Ocean Observing System 2030 Strategy, and the real work of making this ambitious strategy come to life starts now. This is an opportunity to work towards and shape the future Global Ocean Observing System. Expressions of interest should be submitted by 30 September 2019.
Discussion on the future of cities is often framed by the transformative role of technology. Yet while technology and innovation have roles to play in both the global North and South, they cannot be transferred from one context to the next with the same results, says Zarina Patel in a new blog for the World Economic Forum. Drawing on knowledge from the ISC LIRA2030 Africa programme, Zarina argues that reorienting the discussion on the future of cities to the interfaces between science and policy could provide a better understanding of urban change.
The ISC is greatly concerned about the treatment of Dr Ahmadreza Djalali, a physician, lecturer and internationally renowned expert in disaster medicine and emergency response, currently incarcerated and sentenced to death in Iran. Daya Reddy, President of the ISC and Chair of its Committee for Freedom and Responsibility in Science, has issued a statement calling for Dr Djalali's release.
