On our July 24 webinar we recapped the past year of the RPPforCS community, introduced a new structure for our community-facing supports for the coming year, and highlighted a few key events that we believe our community will be interested in. Alan remarks on the fifteenth annual ACM International Computing Education Research (ICER) conference:
On a beautiful Sunday in August in Toronto, Canada, 30 folks, including many RPPforCS’ers, met in a pre-ICER workshop entitled Student Learning: Creating, Refining, and Promoting Evaluation and Research Across Computing Education.  The workshop, led by Adrienne Decker and Monica McGill (and co-sponsored by RPPforCS) fostered a rich discussion around:
- Identifying the assessment needs within the computer science education community,
- Determining what research needs to be conducted to expand the existing set of assessment tools and evaluation instruments,
- Determining ways to create awareness of the need for additional assessment tools and evaluation instruments as well as the research that needs to be conducted to meet those needs, and
- Identifying ways to create awareness of the benefits of using existing, validated evaluation instruments.
Four groups, organized to focus on K-5th grades, 6th-12th grades, post-secondary and K-12 teachers, worked through a process of identifying assessment and evaluation strengths and weaknesses, prioritizing needs, and identifying key changes needed in the short and long term. This effort is part of a larger effort within csedresearch.org to continue to support the needs of the community with respect to evaluation. The results of these conversations will be the subject of a forthcoming white paper that will be shared with the community.
