The Road to Portland: RESPECT / RPPforCS 2020
Once again we will be co-organizing and co-locating with RESPECT for our community gathering as a pre-symposium at SIGCSE in Portland Oregon on Wednesday March 11th.  A major reason for this partnership with RESPECT and SIGCSE is to use these events as a forum for the RPPforCS projects to disseminate their research.
The call for papers is now posted for RESPECT with abstract due October 18th.  Reminder, SIGCSE due date for panels and special sessions is this Friday August 30th.  RPPForCS will again be providing two stipends per project to attend our meeting in Portland - details later.

The SIGCSE Board has announced the opening of applications for the 2020 TRAVEL GRANT Program. More details below!

Did you catch the featured article “A Movement to Bring Computer Science to All Students” by Leigh Ann DeLyser in the June issue of “Hello, World” magazine?
She spoke about the need to enact reform at the system level to allow CS teacher pioneers to flourish and spread the pedagogy to all their peers.

You can download a PDF edition of the magazine to read the full article!

On our July 24 webinar we recapped the past year of the RPPforCS community, introduced a new structure for our community-facing supports for the coming year, and highlighted a few key events that we believe our community will be interested in. You can access the recording and slides here as well as the breakout discussion notes

Alan remarks on the fifteenth annual ACM International Computing Education Research (ICER) conference:
On a beautiful Sunday in August in Toronto, Canada, 30 folks, including many RPPforCS’ers, met in a pre-ICER workshop entitled Student Learning: Creating, Refining, and Promoting Evaluation and Research Across Computing Education. The workshop, led by Adrienne Decker and Monica McGill (and co-sponsored by RPPforCS) fostered a rich discussion around:

  • Identifying the assessment needs within the computer science education community,
  • Determining what research needs to be conducted to expand the existing set of assessment tools and evaluation instruments,
  • Determining ways to create awareness of the need for additional assessment tools and evaluation instruments as well as the research that needs to be conducted to meet those needs, and
  • Identifying ways to create awareness of the benefits of using existing, validated evaluation instruments.

Four groups, organized to focus on K-5th grades, 6th-12th grades, post-secondary and K-12 teachers, worked through a process of identifying assessment and evaluation strengths and weaknesses, prioritizing needs, and identifying key changes needed in the short and long term. This effort is part of a larger effort within csedresearch.org to continue to support the needs of the community with respect to evaluation.  The results of these conversations will be the subject of a forthcoming white paper that will be shared with the community.

The SIGCSE Board has announced the opening of applications for the 2020 Travel Grant Program.  The Travel Grant Program was established through a generous donation by Henry Walker to support faculty and teachers who have not yet had an opportunity to attend the SIGCSE Symposium.

Faculty and teachers who have never attended the Symposium and do not have institutional support to attend are encouraged to apply for the program using an ONLINE FORM. Completion of the form requires some basic demographic information, a SIGCSE member number, and two short-answer questions that ask for a brief description of how attendance will benefit the applicant and how the applicant plans to share what they have learned with their community.

Applications for the 2020 Symposium must be received by October 15, 2019 to be considered.  Due to reviewing constraints, no late applications will be accepted. Please encourage faculty and teachers at your institution who could benefit from Symposium attendance to apply.  More information about the program and the application process can be found on the TRAVEL GRANT PROGRAM PAGE
